Since all the donor blood and its products are screened for cmv, transmission of this virus through transfusion is very unlikely.
Cmv is ubiquitous, and about 3% of healthy newborns are reported to excrete this virus in their urine.

To reduce risk of CMV transmission through blood transfusion, most transfusion services perform what is called a Leukoreduction usually using a special filter to decrease the amount of white blood cells in the blood product. These products are considered to be "CMV safe" and equivalent to CMV negative for practical purposes.
