In brief: "Hot Flashes"
Hot flashes are the main complaint of menopausal women.
This is a flushing sensation usually accompanied by "drenching" sweats and a sensation of "hotness" due to a lack of estrogen. Other symptoms include scant or irregular menses progressing to absence of menses. Vaginal dryness is also a sign of menopause. Libido may change as well. If concerned see your pcp or gynecologist. They can help.

In brief: Variable
Agree with other answers.
Vary from no symptoms to debilitating. The earliest changes are shorter cycles (<27 d), pms symptoms, headaches, and bloating the week before cycles. As one gets closer the cycles get further apart. Night sweats usually precede hot flashes by several years. Help should be sought at the first signs of menopause. Hormone replacement early is most protective!
