In brief: Fluid collection

There is a lining that covers your lung and a lining that covers the chest wall.
There is normally a small amount of fluid in between the two. However, when more fluid collects then it can be seen on a cxr. Causes are many. A ct chest can help further help evaluate the effusion and the lining of the lung. Sometimes sampling the fluid with an ultrasound guided thoracentesis is neccessary.
