I give my 17mnth old 1/2 teaspoon of children's zyrtec (cetirizine) for allergies but some days it's not enough. Can I increase the dose or try something differ t?

I give my 17mnth old 1/2 teaspoon of children's zyrtec (cetirizine) for allergies but some days it's not enough. Can I increase the dose or try something differ t?

Do not increase: A 17 month old should not have allergies to inhaled items like dust or pollen. Zyrtec (cetirizine) could cause drowsiness and I would avoid long term use of zyrtec (cetirizine) in your child. If your child has a runny or stuffy nose that is unresponsive to zyrtec (cetirizine) then see your doctor to make sure there isn't an infection brewing. ...Read more

Zyrtec (cetirizine) works best for me but also is very sedating for the next 24 hrs. Can I split the pill and take a lower dose (5 mg) or even 2.5 mg children's dose? Would those doses be less sedating?

Possibly but...: Decreasing the dose may also decrease the sedative effects. But it will presumably also decrease the main effects as well. Consider trying other medications, and also ensure that you are not taking zyrtec (cetirizine)-d which is more sedating that zyrtec (cetirizine). ...Read more

Can I give my 2 year old children's Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at night.... and how much.....she takes zyrtec in the morning?

Zyrtec (cetirizine) + Benedryl: The occassional use of Benedryl for breakthrough allergy symptoms in addition to regular use of Zyrtec (cetirizine) should generally not cause any problems. Dosing of Benedryl is based on your child's current weight. A simple phone call to your pediatrician should be all that is needed to confirm that the appropriate doses of Zyrtec (cetirizine) and Benedryl are being given. ...Read more

What can I do as a nurse if a 3 year old child is brought to the emergency room being overdose on zyrtec (cetirizine) and has a BP of 70/42, pulse 70, 35 resp?

See blelow: The main se of a zyrtec (cetirizine) od are restlessness, irritability and drowsiness. Pumping the stomach may help but once the drug is absorbed, supportive care is all that can be done. I'm taking zyrtec for severe case of hives. Was told to take Claritin (loratadine) in between if needed. I need more. Can I overdose if I take a second claritin (loratadine)?

You can: Ideally I would recommend Allegra 180mg in the morning and zyrtec 10mg at night and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) in between for breakthrough hives. Take 2 clartin a day is ok, but it may not be as effective as the other 2. ...Read more

For children's allergies should you combine zyrtec and claritin (loratadine)?

Pick one: While both zyrtec (cetirizine) and Claritin (loratadine) are approved for treatment of allergies in children, it is rarely necessary to use both at the same time. In my experience, Claritin works for many and zyrtec works for most patients. While there is little harm to combining these, it doesn't add to the effectiveness. ...Read more

Are hives in children dangerous if they are occurring on the face for long periods of time and the zyrtec (cetirizine) does not make them go away?

I gave my 4 year old 2.5mL children’s Zyrtec 1 hour ago. Can I give him 4mL (not children’s) Robitussin severe multi-symptom cough cold+flu?

Mgt: I would not recommend an over the counter cough medication at this age. If there is nasal congestion, a nasal saline rinse for children may help to reduce symptoms. Zyrtec should be used for an allergic reaction. If he is sick with a cold only, then the Zyrtec is not used. ...Read more

My 10 mon daughter was given 1.5 ml of children's zyrtec (cetirizine) doe severe allergies. Since then she has had fevers on & off. She weighs 21 lbs.

Allergic rhinitis: The fevers are probably not due to the medication. With her bad nasal allergies she may developed ear infection, because children of your daughters age cannot blow their noses properly, and the mucus backs up through the eustachian tube into the middle ear to cause infection. Have her evaluated for possible ear infection. ...Read more

I think my 2 yr old has allergies. I bought childrens zyrtec (cetirizine) but im afraid of side effects. Is it more common for insomnia?

Not really: Zyrtec (cetirizine) is able to cross into the brain and effect the thinking process. Most kids or adults are actually sedated by its actions, which is why they advise giving it in the evening. A percentage of folks will have the opposite effect, probably 1/20, which could interfere with sleep. The response is unique to each & consistent. You can try it once and see if the kid gets hyper. If not it should work fine ...Read more

Bromfed (brompheniramine): Bromfed is a multi - symptom cold medication indicated for children aged 2 years and older. Probably: Although the usual dose of zyrtec (cetirizine) for an adult is 10 mg daily, under the direction of a physician, some patients may need more. It would be important to discuss the dosing with your physician as another approach to treatment may be indicated. Avoid drinking alcohol and be aware that drowsiness may be more likely at higher doses. ...Read more
