Zoloft Vs Effexor Xr
Buproprion: Bupropion sr and wellbutrin (bupropion) xl are two different products with the same active antidepressant drug (buproprion) but they differ in the delivery rate in our system: the sr (slow release) and the xl (extra long). In my clinical experience, they are very similar, and the difference in side effect is the sleeplessness that could result from taking the xl formulation. ...Read more
Very different meds: Effexor (venlafaxine) xr works on serotonin and ne reuptake; wellbutrin xl works on ne and dopamine. Both are long-acting, and both work for depression. Effexor (venlafaxine) can help anxiety + depression; wellbutrin does nothing for anxiety. With wellbutrin the main dangerous side effect can be seizures; with Effexor (venlafaxine) it's possible hypertension. Sexual side effects with effexor; not so with wellbutrin. Different compounds: Cymbalta and Effexor (venlafaxine) XR are different chemical compounds which are both used to treat depression and anxiety disorders; however, they share a similar "mechanism of action", in that both are serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (snri's). Cymbalta is also used in the management of fibromyalgia and (in europe, at least) urinary incontinence. Their side-effect profiles are also different. ...Read more
Lemon balm & Effexor (venlafaxine): There are no direct interactions between the herb lemon balm and effexor, (venlafaxine) but lemon balm does have CNS depressant effects. That's how it may calm agitation, etc. I suggest caution and also discussing this possible use with your doctor. If Effexor (venlafaxine) is not providing the results you hope for, another reason for discussion. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Lot of medications: I'm not sure whether these are all prescribed by the same physician? It sounds as though your bipolar disorder (from the additional info you supplied) may be quite hard to manage, and meds have been added but none removed. Perhaps you'd benefit from a second opinion about your case and possibly simplify your regimen. It could also be that your symptoms demand high intensity measures. ...Read moreSee 4 more doctor answers

Which is better for borderline personality disorder, prozac, Paxil cr, Effexor (venlafaxine) XR or wellbutrin?
No specific med: There is no specific medication approved to treat borderline personality disorder and there is no specific medication that is considered better than others off-label either. It is a question of working with your doctor to treat your symptoms and figuring what works best for you. Sorry, i wish i had an easier answer for you-- good luck! ...Read more
Is Zoloft better drug than Effexor (venlafaxine)? I heard more people using Zoloft than Effexor (venlafaxine).
Yes: Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) is the main metabolite of Effexor (venlafaxine). Pristiq may reduce the risk of drug interactions, because it isn't processed by the cyp2d6 liver enzyme system. Pristiq may have been created as a patent-extender when effexor's patent ran out. Some also feel that antidepressant effect can be achieved with lower dose of Pristiq than Effexor -- but clinical results vary. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Too many meds: Taking all of these medications together is not a good idea. You run the risk of serotonin syndrome, a potentially lethal condition and you are at increased risk of seizures. It sounds like you must have a difficult case of depression and anxiety and I suggest you talk with you doctor about a better combination. Cymbalta (duloxetine) and Wellbutrin are both antidepressants and you should be on one or the other ...Read more
My psychiatrist prescribed Effexor xr for me today. I've been on Zoloft since February. I forgot how she told me to taper 100mg Zo off.
Zoloft Taper: Although I provide guidance often to patients about how to taper off of Zoloft, it is really essential that you clarify this with your medical provider. Us doctors on Healthtap would be over-stepping our bounds if our feedback was being used in place of your psychiatrists. Be well. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
