ADHD or Meds: I think you are wondering if his irritability may be fueled by his condition or his medications. It is not likely that his medication would have that as a sudden side effect. If he has ADHD, then Zoloft (sertraline) is not an effective treatment, and severe ADHD can involve irritability. But I assume you have considered the important possibilities of your relationship or other matters affecting him. ...Read more

Maybe but unlikely: Speak with your prescribing doctor about what is happening. Zoloft (sertraline) usually is prescribed for anxiety, depression, or ocd--all of which can affect attention and focus. Adhd is a lifelong disorder typically diagnosed before puberty. The key is that you are still have difficulties, so explain to your doctor what those are and see if something else can be done to help. ...Read more

Cognitive-Behavioral: Therapy iworks if frequent & long-term. Practice techniques till they're automatic; I.e.,, wear a rubber bracelet & "snap out" obsessions. Tourette Syndrome has multiple motor tics & at least 1 vocal tic for at least a year, often + ADHD & OCD, Stimulants for ADHD ^ anxiety. The non-stimulants Intuniv & Kapvay can be used with SSRI's. A neurologist or psychiatrist can re-evaluate & treat. ...Read more

What are the risks of taking wellbutrin (bupropion) and Zoloft long term? Being used to treat ADHD and OCD respectively

What are the risks of taking wellbutrin (bupropion) and Zoloft long term? Being used to treat ADHD and OCD respectively

Not clear: There is conflicting data regarding use of antidepressants later in life and all cause mortality although there is the notion that the medications are relatively benign. There is always going to be a risk benefit analysis that is necessary in addition to the number needed to treat or a number needed to harm with any medication reflecting the capacity to do both good and bad things to patients. ...Read more

Pills are not skills: Agree w/med options listed by other docs, esp. Guanfacine (intuniv) & atomoxetine (strattera), but since these don't work as quickly as pscyhostimulants, patience is an important part of finding med(s) that is/are right for you (though patience is not easy for people w/adhd, of course). Further, no meds will cure adhd, so cbt for adhd & building coping skills is important too. ...Read more

My 12yr old was misdiagnosed with ADHD & concerta made him worse, so he was re-diagnosed bipolar. He is on zoloft, (sertraline) too. When will we notice a change?

3-5 weeks depends: One should not diagnose based on a medication reaction and there is great danger in overdiagnosing bipolar in adhd children as there is a 70% overlap in symptoms. Before diagnosing bipolar consulting with both a child psychiatrist and a pediatic clinical psychologist who can do some objective psychological tesing is advised. My 10 yr old son has ADHD and recently developed ocd. He is on Zoloft & strattera (atomoxetine). Will the daytrana patch make his OCD worse. Strattera (atomoxetine) isnt working?

My 10 yr old son has ADHD and recently developed ocd. He is on Zoloft & strattera (atomoxetine). Will the daytrana patch make his OCD worse. Strattera (atomoxetine) isnt working?

Possibly: Stimulant medications whether methylphenidate (daytrana, Ritalin, concerta) or amphetamines (Adderall, Vyvanse) can make anxiety worse. For some people, symptoms of ADHD are actually caused by anxiety.. Speak to your son's doctor about medications like Wellbutrin (bupropion) or Amantadine. ...Read more

Would Strattera work for my ADHD? Effexor (venlafaxine) made my anxiety worse. Also have MDD and GAD. Taking Ritalin and Zoloft. Ritalin causing GAD to b worse

Possibly: Strattera (atomoxetine)'s mode of action is like that of the tricyclic antidepressants. As a result it might have a positive effect on anxiety . It might make your inattentiveness better, especially if the anxiety is contributing. Speak to your doctor about Strattera (atomoxetine) and stopping Ritalin if it is making your anxiety symptoms worse. ...Read more
