I have a great insurance co, nameless, I take 8mg Zofran (ondansetron) 3xdaily, but my ins co only allows me 12tabs /month...Any food for the fight? Thanks4ur help!

Not unusual: It is not unusual for insurance companies to limit the use of medications that are designed for intermittent or short-term use. You may try to get "prior authorization" by getting your prescribing physician to submit in writing to the insurance company (or pharmacy benefits manager) that your use of zofran (ondansetron) at 3 times a day is a medical necessity. It's worth a try.

Is it dangerous to take Zofran (ondansetron) for long periods of time?

Zofran (ondansetron): This depends on how you define a long time and what the dose is. The maximum dose was reduced a couple of years ago because of potential cardiac side effects. Nausea is generally a symptom of something else. If you are a chemotherapy patient, zofran (ondansetron) is fine. Otherwise, check with your physician as to why you are needing zofran (ondansetron).

Is there anything stronger and/or faster than Zofran (ondansetron) odt8mg. Pills for quick use when needed for preventing a cyclic vomiting spell?

See below: A higher dose of zofran can cause several side effects. You can, however, alternate zofran with a few other anti-emetics so different types of meds are used, thereby reducing the toxicity but hopefully improving your nausea symptoms. Ask your doctor if it is medically indicated & safe for you. Examples include compazine, reglan, & phenergan (promethazine).

More's not better: Zofran (ondansetron) may slow the transit time in the gut and rarely the bowels can stop moving. Therefore potential to prolong the period of time in wh/a virus is in contact w/the gut. In a study in children w/vomiting gastroenteritis who took zofran (ondansetron) x 48 hrs, return to the er w/diarrhea was higher in the kids w/zofran (ondansetron). Another study gave 1 dose & the er return was less w/zofran (ondansetron) but kids had more diarrhea.
