The body converts it to Hydrocortisone to become active. 25 mg of cortisone has about same effect as 5 mgm prednisone. The average person would produce 3-6 mg of pred daily. So why use a substitute? The synthetic has more anti-inflammatory effect; but has less effect ...Read more

Had bronchitis since b4 thanksgiving still have it after 2 rounds of Zithromax and prednisone starting to believe it's something else is this normal?

I agree: It is possible that you have had multiple consecutive viral infections in which case zithromax will have no effect whatsoever on the infection. If it is viral bronchitis however, prednisone usually provides some relief. Perhaps you have the cough due to allergies, undiagnosed asthma or acid reflux. I would see your PCP for work up. ...Read more

Pulmonary doctor: You need to be more thoroughly evaluated. Tossing multiple medications on this in an attempt to see if something works is only one way to approach this. A pulmonary specialist will probably get to the root of this. ...Read more

Antiinflammatory: You're the only one who can really tell if the treatment helps or not. A doctor gives what he feels is best for your condition. I am certain your doctor suspects inflammation in your airways and so the inhaled and systemic steroids are given. It is the same way we treat all airway inflammations. ...Read more

Went to ER yesterday & told I have early stages of pneumonia. Prescribed benzonatate, azithromycin prednisone but still coughing, is this normal?

Give it time: It will take at least 2-3 days for your symptoms to start to improve and probably well over a week for them to clear up entirely. Hang in there. Take all your meds as prescribed and discuss with your doctor if you have any questions or concers. ...Read more

Was prescribed azithromycin and prednisone for swollen tonsils, not strep or mono, almost 3 days and haven't seen much improvement?

Could be virus: Not every tonsil infection is bacterial. Furthermore, zithromax is not a good antibiotic for tonsillitis because it has NO effect against NTHI, a common cause of bacterial tonsillitis. Finally, you may have a viral infection. Rule out infectious mononucleosis, caused by EB virus. ...Read more

Violent coughing for a month, even after a round of Azithromycin& prednisone two weeks ago. Chest xray clear then, but now I hear rales in lungs.

Hyperacusis?: Oh yeah? How did you manage to hear rales in your own lungs? Anyways, if you had a form of Bordatella infection you could be coughing for another month and no antibiotic on Earth will help you. You need a strong cough medicine or two and a doctor to prescribe them. And while he's at it he can listen to your lungs with a stethoscope for rales, egophany and whispered pectoriloquoy and feel for fremitus ...Read more

I have COPD coughing up milky phlegm im on a 69 50 40 30 20 10 prednisone taper along woth azithromycin 250x ten days. Maybe this isn't bacterial?

See your doctor: COPD causes sputum production and cough even in the absence of bacterial infection. This is called chronic bronchitis, and there are inhalers and other medicines which can reduce cough and sputum production. I suggest that you consult your doctor to see what else he/she can offer for symptom control. ...Read more

15 days: The time for 1/2 of azithromycin (zithromax) to be eliminated from the body is approximately 3 days. Drugs generally stay in the body for 5 half lives after the last dose. Azithromycin will stay in her body for about 15 days after the last dose. An allergic reaction can continue until all of the drug is eliminated and for several days thereafter. Same reaction. Anyone have bad side effects with omnicef (cefdinir) and not zithromax?

Different drugs: Omnicef (cefdinir) is a cephalosporin antibiotic and Azithromycin is in an entirely different class of drugs. There should be no cross reactions allergically. But you do not describe what side-effects to which you are referring. If this answer is not satisfactory, ask again. ...Read more

I was given zithromax and I think I had a steven johnson syndrome reaction the docs changed medicine and sent me home is this an ok or should I go back?

Depends on symptoms: If your physician is truly concerned about either Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis you should be admitted to the hospital. Early recognition and immediate withdrawal of any potentially causative agents are critical first steps in management. If the diagnosis is unclear, then you should be seen by your primary doctor immediately so that the correct diagnosis can be made. ...Read more

I have strep throat. Initially treated with Zithromax, but had a reaction of facial swelling, switched to Biaxin, (clarithromycin) on day 5 now and no relief.

Check with doctor: Even with a positive strep test, most sore throat symptoms are primarily due to viruses -- and viral infections do not respond to antibioticcs; they have to clear up on their own. Still, you should continue to take the antibiotic as directed; or check back with the doctor who prescribed it and follow her instructions. In any case, you should start to improve soon. Good luck! ...Read more
