Zantac For Hives
Not exactly: Zantac (ranitidine) is an h2 (histamine) blocker that is typically used for ge (acid) reflux. However, it is commonly used to treat chronic hives in combination with traditional antihistamines. It is also used for additional treatment of severe (anaphylaxis) allergic reactions although first line treatment is Epinephrine and h1 antihistamine. It will not help allergic rhinitis. ...Read more
Add-on for hives: Ranitidine (zantac), although it's a different kind of histamine blocker (h2 for acid vs h1 for allergies), has been shown to have some anti-allergy properties, especially when used with an h1 blocker like Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for hives. There was actually one study that showed benefit in nasal allergies, but i don't know anyone that prescribes it for that purpose. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Good question: Hives (or urticaria) represent a sensitivity to something dilating the small vessels under the skin, causing a raised pink lesion; if u press on it, it will blanch, let it go it pinks up again. Many causes: foods, chemicals, perfumes, very often stress. Stress can increase acid formation in stomach, Zantac (ranitidine) reduces it. Over 50% of time, one can't find cause. I treat initially c antihistamines. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Soon starting amitriptyline 10mg for migraine. Also frequently use Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for allergies. Safe if taken a few hrs apart?
Yes, if prescribed: This low dose of amitriptylene may help prevent migraines, but may have some sedation & constipation with it. Best to take it at night. You might consider other, newer options for allergies that aren't as sedating as Benadryl (diphenhydramine) -- especially when added to amitriptylene. Discuss with your doctor, who knows you best.. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Is allegra (fexofenadine), (fexofenadine) taken daily, a good choice for controlling med allergies and chronic hives? Tried other drugs but didn't care for them, hoping allegra (fexofenadine) ok.
Post-nasal drips?: If the cough is from post-nasal drips , then I prefer using cetirizine or fexofenadine. A better option would be a nasal steroid. However if the cough is from a sinus infection, you may then need an antibiotic; from asthma, you will need asthma medications. Best to see a doctor. ...Read more
Partially: I assume you mean hives or itchy rash from sun exposure (solar urticaria or polymorphous light eruption). Antihistamines can help treat the itch associated with the hives. If rash occurs often, taking an antihistamine daily may help. Sunscreen with uva and uvb blockers may help as well. These may not help other sun-sensitive rashes (eg, with lupus). See an allergist or dermatologist for more info. ...Read more
