Allergies occur when your immune system is triggered by envirionmental factors it should ignore--for example, pollen in the air, or dander on a cat or dog--and creates cells to fight against them. An allergic reaction typically causes itching, congestion, or drainage, and ...Read more
Not exactly: Zantac (ranitidine) is an h2 (histamine) blocker that is typically used for ge (acid) reflux. However, it is commonly used to treat chronic hives in combination with traditional antihistamines. It is also used for additional treatment of severe (anaphylaxis) allergic reactions although first line treatment is Epinephrine and h1 antihistamine. It will not help allergic rhinitis. ...Read more
Add-on for hives: Ranitidine (zantac), although it's a different kind of histamine blocker (h2 for acid vs h1 for allergies), has been shown to have some anti-allergy properties, especially when used with an h1 blocker like Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for hives. For anaphylaxis, zantac can be added for it's effect on blood vessels. ...Read more
Need alternative to zirtec for allergy-induced asthma. Allegra and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) don't work, nor albuterol asthma inhalars. Claritin gives me nasal pain.
Allergic help: You will definitely need to speak with your physician about this. Other alternatives include the short acting chlorphenamine (chlortrimetron), sold over the counter. There are prescription medications - xyzal, singulair, xopenex, (levalbuterol) Flonase and more. Ultimately - make sure you speak with your physician about this, since the medications you have tried so far are not providing relief for you. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Keep taking..: The allegra (fexofenadine) regularly, not on as needed basis, and see your doctor, you may need prescription medications. Environmental control is important too, i.e. Avoid triggers of your allergies, cats, dogs, smokers, etc.. Better if you can see an allergist, check aaaai.org or acaai.org for an allergist in your area, good luck ...Read more
