I usually get a z-pak when I experience these symptoms..

Depends: On what other symptoms you do or do not have, how long you have had your symptoms, and underlying medical problems (ie COPD, smoking, etc). Sinus infections rarely require antibiotics unless symptoms have persisted > 10 days, or are accompanied by a high fever. Regardless, Azithromycin (Z-pak) is not effective for sinusitis, given high resistance due to years of overprescribing to patients. ...Read more

Do I need to go back to dr? Last week I finished z-pak for pneumonia. It worked! But now, a week later, I have mild coughing with white-yellow sputum

Do I need to go back to dr? Last week I finished z-pak for pneumonia. It worked! But now, a week later, I have mild coughing with white-yellow sputum

Possibilities....: Sometimes after an airway or lung infection, bronchospasm and/or airway inflammation can occur as the infection is resolving, resulting in continued coughing. The treatment for this includes bronchodilator and steroid inhalers which need to be prescribed by your doctor. Another possibility is that the infection itself is still resolving. If the cough persists or worsens over time, see your doctor. ...Read more

Prescribed Z-pak and vomited 30 min after taking first dose. Doctor said to take 2nd dose tomorrow and see how I feel. Is it bad that I lost 1st dose?

Depends: If you have a life threatening susceptible bacterial infection then it is bad. If you are doing fine then it is probably not a big deal. Azithromycin lasts a long time in your system and you probably absorbed a fair amount of the dose if you kept it down 30 minutes. ...Read more

What's the safest anti-biotic associated with heart risk outside of z-pak? Proven, not opinions. Thanks!

What infections?: Different antibiotics are used based on the known or expected type of bacteria involved in your infection. There are gram positive and gram negative bacteria. There are antibiotics used for one or another and different amounts and strengths based on the type of infection. If you don't have an allergy, penicillin is probably the most benign of antibiotics but it may not treat your infection. ...Read more

I got dx w/pharingitis. The strep test was negative, but the NP went ahead and rx a Z-Pak. If this were viral and not bacterial, would meds harm me?

I got dx w/pharingitis. The strep test was negative, but the NP went ahead and rx a Z-Pak. If this were viral and not bacterial, would meds harm me?

Excellent question: There are 2 points I wish to make. First, if you have a viral infection, placing you on an antibiotic may be harmful because you are killing off "good" bacteria in the nasopharynx. Secondly, azithromycin is not a good choice for UPPER RESPIRATORY TRACT INFECTIONS because this drug is not effective against NTHI. Finally, a rapid strep test only rules out Strep. A regular throat culture better. ...Read more
