Yes: The symptoms will improve whether or not you take any medication. The considerable complications that can occur after strep can occur if you do not complete your medication. At one dose a day I would think it is not to difficult to complete the rx. Trying to "save some" for next time can put you at risk. ...Read more
Strep throat and wanted 2 know how long it'll take to swallow comfortably again (prescribed Zithromax z pack)& is oatmeal and hot wheat cereal ok 2 eat?
Yes: The reason Y we worry about sore throats caused by group A beta hemolytic streptococci is that, if untreated, 1-3% go on to develop rheumatic heart disease. Unless you are allergic to penicillin it has been found to be sensitive (killed by it) to pen since 1947! Unless you have a problem with oatmeal, eat it. Pain should disappear quickly. Was diagnsd with strep throat and comp. A z pack (penicillin allergy). I have since dvlpd very painful sores on the roof of my mouth only. Normal?
Not usually: Although a drug reaction called Stevens Johnson Syndrome usually affects the mucous membrane, I suspect that your current problem is just a progression of the initial viral infection causing the sore throat (assuming that strep was not documented). If the problem persists, see your doctor or a dentist. In the meanwhile, ask your doctor if you should continue with ZPak. ...Read more

I'm on a z pack for strep since yesterday. But my throat still hurts just as much-no relief yet. Is this normal?
My throat has been hurting off and on for about two months. Strep test neg. Finished z pack sunday and now have huge white patches on throat. Advice?
Monilia: You probably are having fungal overgrowth as a result of recent antibiotic treatment. A less likely cause would be mononucleosis. Based on your history you may have a viral cause of your sore throat and didn't need the antibiotics in the first place. See the doctor if symptoms persist. ...Read more

I was just prescribed Z Pak for reoccurring Strep Throat. Is it safe for me to take an Aleve (naproxen) D while taking the Z Pak?
YES.: Assuming you aren't allergic to Aleve (Naproxen) or similar NSAID medications like Motrin (Iburofen) or aspirin, you can take it with ZPack. You may not need the D part of the Aleve D. It is a nasal decongestant that you might not need and has side effects like jitteriness and sleep disturbance. ...Read more
I started Z Pak (azithromycin) 48 hrs ago for strep throat. The throat pain is finally going away, but now my left ear is really hurting. Should I be concerned?
Ear pain: The ear pain is most probably related to the strep throat infection. Give the antibiotic therapy more time to clear up the strep infection. Be sure to take the full course of Z pak (azithromycin). If you do not improve, call your doctor for a recheck. Meanwhile take medication for pain eg Ibuprofen if that works for you. ...Read more

Strep throat: Strep throat should be diagnosed by rapid strep test and/or throat culture. Azithro is acceptable alternative if allergic to penicillins. Short course of Azithro is generally fine when taken with other medications, however, there may be some specific drug interactions. How much resistance of strep throat to zithromax is there in california now? I heard it varies a lot all over the world.
Strep: There has never been a group a streptococcus grown from a person that has been resistant to penicillin.Azithromycin is one of the most widely studied antibiotics for the treatment of group a beta-hemolytic streptococcus infections. Azithromycin has the advantage of simple and short dosing regimen. I am not aware of resistance of strep to zithro. ...Read more

Hello. I was diagnosed with strep throat 3 days ago. Started taking azithromycin 2 tablets 250 mg first day and 1 everyday for 4 days. Not better!
Strep/Zithromax: I'm not surprised. More and more strep are becoming resistant to Azithromycin and it is not considered a very good antibiotic anymore for strep. Penicillin or Amoxicillin is still the treatment of choice by far. You need to call your doc back today, let them know you are not improving on the current antibiotic and request a change or re-evaluation (could you have something lie mono in addition?). ...Read more

Abx for Strep throat: Zithromax is an excellent alternative for Strep infection in those allergic to penicillin, but it generally takes a little more time to see improvement. I was prescribed Azithromycin for strep throat, took 1st dose w/40 mg Magnesium before knowing not supposed to. How much would that affect absorbance?
One time take: Shouldn't be a problem since you only did it once. Talk with the doctor, maybe they'll want you to take 1 pill extra to make it a 6 day as opposed to 5 day regimen. Frankly, I probably wouldn't. I predict everything will be peachy keen. ...Read more
I have strep throat. Initially treated with Zithromax, but had a reaction of facial swelling, switched to Biaxin, (clarithromycin) on day 5 now and no relief.
Check with doctor: Even with a positive strep test, most sore throat symptoms are primarily due to viruses -- and viral infections do not respond to antibioticcs; they have to clear up on their own. Still, you should continue to take the antibiotic as directed; or check back with the doctor who prescribed it and follow her instructions. In any case, you should start to improve soon. Good luck! ...Read more

I was recently prescribed Azithromycin 500mg, 1 tablet each day for 3 days for strep throat. Is this effective in killing the strep infection?
Yes, effective: Your doctor would not have prescribed it if she didn't expect it to be effective. Perhaps you're concerned about only 3 days treatment. However, azithromycin is very long lasting; each dose remains in your system for about 10 days. So this treatment will be active against strep for almost 2 weeks. It will work just fine. ...Read more
Can I break in half and crush a 500 mg azithromycin to give 250mg to my 78 lb 7 year old boy with strep throat? No clinics open today and he's in pain
No: There's no way you can know he has strep throat. Doctors can't either without a test. Most sore throats are caused by viruses and shouldn't be treated with antibiotics. Also, antibiotics have very little effect on the symptoms of strep throat. They're given only to prevent rare complications. ...Read more
If I was prescribed Azithromycin for strep throat 5 days ago and have no improvement. Now I have severe tonsillitis. What do I do? Can I take amox too
Reassessment Needed: While Azithromycin is effective against some forms of strep throat, it does not work for all forms of strep throat. There are also multiple other causes for tonsillitis. Usually if your medication is effective, you begin to feel much better within 2 to 3 days of starting the medication. I recommend you have your throat reevaluated to assess appropriate changes in your treatment or medication. ...Read more
