Yesterday I Noticed I Have An Indentation On The Back In The Middle Coule I Have Spina Bifida
Grandbaby born yesterday with spina bifida.Has knee and hip movement and minimal feeling in her feet. Will she be paralyzed or walk with devices..
Hard to predict: Even if future surgery/therapy goes well, it is hard to predict the eventual needs of these kids. Many walk with assistive devices early with encouragement but later abandon them for a chair to gain speed. Their best hope is a supportive family that works with them to do as well as they can. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
My baby has a dimple on the base of her spine that was there at birth. Can that be occult spina bifida?
Paresthesia is the : medical term for tingling, prickling or burning sensations. It can be temporary, from pressure on a nerve or as nerves re-connect after surgery. It can also be from nerve damage from tethering of the spinal cord, attachment of the cord to the spinal column, in a child or adult with Spina Bifida. Your neurologist or neurosurgeon may order an MRI & other studies after clinical evaluation. ...Read more
Is occult spina bifida inherited? Mom and i both have dimple on lower back. Mine shows up on xray.
Spina Bifida Occulta: There is genetic basis for the disorder, but most likely interaction of multiple genes as well as environmental factors such as Folic Acid deficiency in the pregnant mother. If mother had 1 child with sbo, there is 3% chance that her second child will have sbo. This risk can be reduced to 1% if mother takes high dose Folic Acid at 4mg. Daily, before & during pregnancy. ...Read more
NO.: Increased msafp (maternal serum Alpha fetoprotein) is a marker of open fetal defects (spina bifida aperta, encephalocele, gastroschisis, omphalocele, amniotic band sequence, cleft lip/palate) and placental anomalies (accreta, chorioangiomas). The most common reason for a positive screen without prior ultrasound is wrong due date! relax, talk to your genetic counselor and get a detailed ultrasound! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My 8 month old has 2 little what seem to be bruises on the back of her back, could it be Spina Bifida?
No: Spina bifida is obvious. The occult form is not but doesn't present as a "bruise". A flat bruise like skin discoloration around the base of the spine or buttocks is most likely a birthmark called a Mongolian patch. It is relatively common and has no significance more than its tendency to cause concerns. ...Read more
Is it advisable for a 53yr old to have back surgery for spondylosis. She has possible spina bifida on l-1, 2&3. What are the risks?
Spondylosis: Spondylosis is simply arthritis. This is not a common reason for spine surgery. Now, if pressure is present on the nerves from the arthritis (spinal stenosis) that is a different story. Spina bifida shouldn't affect treatment, as it usually is the occulta (stable) type. I would try nonsurgical treatment first: physical therapy, arthritis meds, nerve blocks, & reserve surgery for failure of above. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I have spina bifida as well as other back problems and I am looking for someone to be my doctor and maybe prescribe me medicine for the constant pain I stay in?
I am experiencing constant pain in my lower back a bit above the scarr where I had surgery for spina bifida. What could be the reason for this?
Painful Back Scar: Scarring from any surgical procedure can cause pain in both the short and long-term. In your case, I would be more concerned because spina bifida is a complex issue requiring long-term follow-up to monitor neurological function and any changes in spine pain and stability. If you haven't see a spine surgeon in a while, my recommendation is to get an evaluation with x-rays and possibly an MRI. ...Read more

Possibly: Spina Bifida occulta is often an incidental finding when someone develops back pain and has an x-ray done. This is due to incomplete fusion of the spinous process during development and is congenital. An MRI could be helpful to examine the spinal cord to see if there is and tethering. Discuss with you Doc. ...Read more

Possibly: Spina bifida occulta is a congenital skeletal and therefore musculoskeletal abnormality. It is more a predisposing factor, meaning some people will have problems due to it while others will not. Cheerleading is an energetic sport and involves a lot of stress to the spine. One should remain active but try to find activities that do not aggravate or predispose to pain. ...Read more

Hi doctors, can scoliosis cause chest pain ? I had Spina bifida as a child and operated on when born ,walk slightly with curved back.
Neuromuscular : scoliosis causes chest pain. SB is a neuromuscular condition that causes muscle weakness, spasticity or paralysis, making them unable to support the spine, resulting in scoliosis. If not fused in adolescence, scoliosis can progress in adulthood. Premature arthritis of SB includes the spine & worsens with age. Spinal cord tethering can occur at any age. See your SB team for evaluation & treatment ...Read more

Would the pain i am having in my neck cause issues with my spina bifida cause i have a lot of lower back pain?
Possibly: It depends on the type and severity of your spina bifida... did you have surgery? Did it cause any scoliosis or difficulties with walking? If so, you may have secondary neck pain from irregularities in your lower spine and the way you walk and hold your body. I suggest seeing your neurosurgeon, physical therapist, orthopedist, or who ever else has helped you with your spina bifida so far. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
