6 month old got vaccines and 4 hours later fever of 101. Fever not going down with Tylenol (acetaminophen) and has runny nose. She seems very miserable. ER?
Not necessarily: The 3rd dose of the pneumococcal vaccine will often give such a mild fever in infants. It is more expected than not. Some kind virus in our family. Had 102 fever 2 days. Now fever gone. Little dry or sore throat. No trouble swallowing. Read about eppiglotitis. Scared?
Look in your throat: There's a little 'grape' like thing hanging down - called the uvula, and if you say 'ahhhh' well enough, you might see the epiglottis which is a flap above the airway. (Directly below uvula). If those structures are red, swollen/inflammed, painful - then you need to be seen by a doctor. The absence of fever is a good sign. Fortunately epiglottitis is rare, but you want to be careful indeed. ...Read more
