Yeast Found On Throat Culture
Sore throat/slightly blocked nose/headache. Throat culture says: Streptoccus viridans (moderate growth), no pathogenic organisms found. what to do?
This is usually done when a throat infection is suspected. One will take a swab of the throat and then place the swab in culture medium. This will then be grown on a culture plate to determine if/what type of bacteria is causing the infection. Both viruses and bacteria ...Read more
White spots on tonsils, sore throat. Being treated for vag. Yeast infection. Related or strep? How to treat strep if antibiotics make yeast worse?
My throat culture & sensitivity c/s report says "organism: moderate growth streptococcus viridans group" is this normal, i've white coating on tongue?
Possible fungal...: Overgrowth. If you have cultures, you are probably already on an antibiotic for something. S. Viridens is a common oral bacteria that we all have on some level. Yours may be higher than normal but the white on your tongue could be candidiasis from a lack of "regular" bacteria that keep it down. Try 1/2 hydrogen peroxide/ 1/2 or mouthwash, brush your tongue, if no luck see a dr. May need nystatin. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Allergy related: Probably this is "cobblestoning," which is the finding of streaks of lymphoid tissue on the posterior pharynx (back of the throat). It's caused by chronic allergy type symptoms. A doctor should be able to confirm that with a look in the back of the throat. If your allergies are bad, there are various treatments that may help, such as antihistamines or even immunotherapy. Try an allergist if needed ...Read more

Infant black tongue. Tried nystatin, then swabbed for culture and tried fluconazole, no yeast on culture. Dr said iron stain? Doesn't get supplement.
Prob okay, but...: hairy black tongue can occur in infants because of infection or failure of the tongue papillae (bumps) to properly shed their cells like it should. it is important to distinguish if the black could be melanin, since that might indicated a skin disorder. black 'spots' can also be a sign of a genetic condition, so it is important to have this evaluated further, likely with biopsy. ...Read more

Probably herpes: Association of lesions with hairs is atypical for herpes, but your gyn's opinion on examination is more important. Were you tested for herpes and yeast? If herpes is suspected, you should have been started on treatment immediately with oral valacylovir or acyclovir. Waiting for a test result may be too long for it to help much, and the drugs are harmless. Discuss with your doctor. ...Read more

Not possible: Dr. Lawson's repl is exactly right. I'll add that there is no way to diagnose oral chlamydia except by throat swab. However, such testing isn't generally recommended anyway. Although chlamydia can be found in the throat, that's rarely the only site of infection. And if you have genital chlamydia, the treatment will take care of an oral infection if present. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
