Thyroid cancer patient, my thy numbers 2 years after total thyroidectomy: tsh= 0.32, tg ab= 23, tg=0.2, pth= 68, vitamin d= 12. Number meanings?

See a Specialist: Tg ab and tg are a marker for remaining thyroid tissue (and presumably thyroid cancer), TSH is the hormone that stimulates thyroid tissue to grow and produce thyroid hormone, PTH is the hormone that controls your calcium metabolism. You should discuss your lab interpretations with a specialist, especially given your history of thyroid cancer. ...Read more

Total thyroidectomy 10 years ago. numbers stable. last four months low numbers. levo increased from 50mcg to 88 to 150 to 175. why am I not absobing?

This is common: The reason that it is important to continue checking thyroid function regularly for the remainder of life after thyroidectomy is because the requirements for thyroid hormone replacement can change at any time without any identifiable cause. It is not unusual for a person to require high doses of thyroid replacement following total thyroidectomy. There is no reason for concern about absorption. ...Read more

Can scar tissue after thyroidectomy appear 5 years later?

Scar tissue?: Scar tissue typically forms and reforms for the first 12-18 months after any surgery. If scar tissue continues to grow after that in may be something else - keloid, lymph nodes, etc. Or in the case of thyroidectomy you may have thyroid tissue that has begun growing again in that area. If this is suspicious or if your original surgery was for cancer i would recommend a biopsy. Make an appointment. ...Read more

Suffered from thyroiditis for years and recently had thyroidectomy. What do antibodies attack if gland is removed?

Suffered from thyroiditis for years and recently had thyroidectomy. What do antibodies attack if gland is removed?

Probably nothing: This is a good question. In most cases, hashimoto's thyroiditis is limited to the thyroid. Thyroid gone (or hypothyroidism) and there is no more inflammation. Presumably those antibodies don't attack anything. But people with hashi can get other autoimmune diseases, such as addison's, type 1 diabetes, pernicious anemia, and others. But this is not common. ...Read more

I have been dizzy for three years since thyroidectomy. I now have many problems with colds and sinus problems. Is it all related?

Persistent sinus: problems, dizziness and colds may indicate Allergies due to something in your environment. Most common are dust mites, molds, animal or pollen , etc So a consult with an allergist may help. The thyroid surgery probably has no relation to it if your are monitoring your TSH and dose of Thyroxine. Best wishes. ...Read more

Hello Dr, three years ago i had a total thyroidectomy, ever since i take Oroxine 100 mg nil on Sundays why do I feel dizzy and lightheaded on Sundays?

Difficult to say: Not taking the Oroxine 1x weekly should not decrease your thyroid hormone levels significantly enough to cause symptoms, since the half life is about 7 days. Talk to your Dr. and see if you can take it on Sunday as well to see if it fixes your symptoms. ...Read more

I had a a total thyroidectomy to remove a 3 CM malignant nodule. Do i need rai treatment? If i do, how do I protect my family? I have a 13 years old.

Probably so.: Assuming it was a 3cm papillary or follicular thyroid cancer, most physicians would advise you to have rai (i-131) at this point, as it will improve your chances of survival. The center that gives you the rai should be able to explain the radiation safety precautions to you. It is important to remember that rai has been saving lives for over 6 decades and is given thousands of times per year. ...Read more

Hi six years ago i had a thyroidectomy removing the right lobe only. this has left me permanently hoarse.and sometimes even waking to a lost voice.what can be the cause of this?

When 2 get evaluated: Voice changes after thyroidectomy can occur, it is usually temporary. The nerve that controls the voice is close to the site of your surgery. Get an evaluation with your local ENT doc. Ask for an evaluation of your vocal cords. Likely they will look at your cords with a scope. It is not too late, take friend or family with you to exam. Be well. ...Read more
