Missed last Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) active pill on Sun. Took a 4day pill free break. Had sex on 3rd break day; took active pill on Thur. Do i need Emergency contraception?
That depends: If a pill break is scheduled to allow for menstruation (just like the inactive pills are meant to do), then you remain protected during that break and do not need to use emergency contraception. If the break was taken mid-cycle (< 3 weeks since your last inactive pill cycle or "pill break") then protection would be diminished, and emergency contraception would reduce the chance of pregnancy. ...Read more
Can dioxycycline (for 70days, trip to india) interfere with the effectiveness of my bc (yaz) ? Back-up contraception advised?
Yes: Doxycycline, like many antibiotics, are preferentially absorbed when taken at the same time as an oral contraceptive pill decreasing the absorption of the birth control pill and therefore its' effectiveness. Space the Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) pill and the antibiotic 12 hours apart, and consider a "back up" means of contraception during the 70 days of the doxycycline. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Forgot to take my birth control pill (Yaz) & I was 20 hours late. Besides contraception issues, how bad is it for my health to take it that late?
Take it Now: If you are late taking just 1 pill, it may not give you much trouble. Some women will experience breakthrough bleeding which is irregular bleeding in this cycle. It will definitely reduce your birth control efficacy. I always advise patients to use another form of birth control if they miss a pill. do not think in general they pose significant health issues. ...Read more
I have 3 more pills of Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) to take - how long until my COC (Yaz) is fully effective again? Should I use a secondary method of contraception?
Yes: Trimethoprim, one of the ingredients in bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim), (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) mildly induces the liver to process the hormones in birth control pills faster, theoretically reducing their effectiveness. The half life of bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is only 8-10 hours but the enzymes that are induced take longer to return to normal levels. The usual recommendation is to use a backup method for 7 days after finishing bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim). ...Read more
What's the difference between levlen ED and Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) contraception pills just wanted to know so i can switch to Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) as i'm currently on levlen ed?
Does Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) contraception ever cause teenagers to have suicidal thoughts?
Yes: It is possible for any hormone to cause a change in a person's normal moods. That includes hormones contained in birth control pills as well as androgenic hormones like testosterone. The mood disturbances caused from exogenous (from outside the body) hormones can become so severe that a person can even feel suicidal. I would discuss with your prescribing physician immediately any such symptoms. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
