My pcp prescribed yasmin (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) for my pcos. Is it safe to take yasmin (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol)? I've heard so many horror stories surrounding this ocp. Should i take any precautions
In my opinion if: U have pcos that should be managed by an obgyn , not a pcp, I am sure your pcp is very good , but an obgyn knows more about that, i personally never prescribe that pill anymore , #1 it has 30 mcg estrogen, # 2 it is a 21/7 pill and for my pts who have pcos they should be on a 24/4 or a 24/2/2 or take the pill continuously and yasmin (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) has drospirinone u have to watch your k+ and no anti-inflammatories. ...Read more

Emergency contraceptives use levongestrel as the progesterone, so why do yaz, (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) yasmin, beyaz contain drospirenone instead?
Side-effects: There are many different types of progesterone. The positive and negative effects of a birth-control pill are determined by the type of progesterone in the pill. Drospirenone is good for preventing water retention and excessive hair growth but it increases the risk of blood clot formation in legs and lungs. Its not effective for emergency contraception. Levonorgestrel works best for this. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
On Yasmin (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) and took modafinil. I read it lessens effectiveness of preventing pregnancy and must use protection 2 months. What are the percentages?
Not known: modafinil increases the activity of certain enzymes in the liver that process progesterone, a hormone used in many birth control pills. This can cause progesterone levels to be lower than expected, leading to decreased effectiveness at preventing pregnancy. This has not actually been studied (ie women on BCP, women on BCP and modafinil. How many get pregnant?). No % available. Sorry. ...Read more
Most ok: Combined oral contraceptives (coc's) like Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) do not interact with most analgesic medications. Exceptons are; barbituates (fioricet/fiorinal), topamax, st john's wort. If you are on thyroid med, may need to increase dose since coc's increase thyroid binding globulin. Also be careful of any drugs that increase serum potassium when taking yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol). ...Read more
