Yag Laser (Overview)

Yag stands for yttrium-aluminum-garnet, the elements which compose the crystal used in this laser. The wavelength of laser disrupts molecular bonds, causing breakage of tissue without burning or heat. This type of laser is useful for some intra-ocular procedures, including iridotomy and capsulotomy, as well as hair removal, as mentioned previously. A modified yag is used to lower eye pressure.

What is the outcome of yag laser iridotomy?

Hole in the iris: This procedure is done in order to lower the risk of angle closure in patients with anatomically narrow angles. If the iris and the cornea are in close proximity they may touch and by doing so, block the drainage pathway of the eye. The hole made by the yag laser serves to provide a pathway for fluid to move between the front and back of the eye. ...Read more

Yag laser and and can you get glaucoma from it?

Low risk: Yag laser used to help clarify vision following cataract surgery is very common and has low risk. That being said, less than 5% of patients may experience iop elevation that usually is transient. In patients at higher risk (ie. Those with moderately severe glaucoma, inflammatory glaucoma) an iop check 60' post laser is advisable. Treating the eye pre ; post laser with iop reducing meds is helpful. ...Read more

What is the difference between argon laser and yag laser?

Wavelength of light: Medical lasers work by using electrical energy to excite a "laser medium". The laser medium can be a natural or synthetic substance such as a gas (e.g. Argon), a liquid or a solid (e.g. Yag). When excited by electricity these substances give off light energy of a unique wavelenth. Some wavelengths of light heat tissue, while others are absorbed by colored molecules such as melanin or hemaglobin. ...Read more

What are the benefits of using a yag laser in order to perform a surgery? What is so great about a yag laser as compared to conventional surgery? .

The: The yag laser is just a tool used to treat various conditions, it may or may not be better than conventional surgery, depending on your goals and personal circumstances. Lasers just fire 1 wavelength of light. Each laser is powered by an energy source (some use a standard outlet, others use special outlets), however what makes each laser unique is the medium through which the energy is delivered, that gives you the wavelength of light. Another property of laser surgery is the speed with which that energy is delivered. Nd:yag lasers fire their energy through a crystal (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet) and emit light at 1064nm. Depending on the speed of that delivery, the 1064nm wavelength can be used to treat unwanted hair, unsightly birth marks or tattoo ink in the world of dermatology. At las vegas dermatology, we have 2 nd:yag lasers- one fires in the millisecond range and is used for hair removal in darker skin typed individuals, the other is a q-switched nd:yag laser, which fires its energy in the nanosecond range to destroy tattoo ink (a particle much smaller than hair requiring energy delivery over a very short period of time). ...Read more

Yag laser (q-switched) birthmark removal. How well does this work?

Depends on type: Depends on type of birthmark and laser. YAG lasers can vary slightly on their targets. Birthmarks can be reddish or purple vascular type lesions or pigmented mole type lesions. Vascular lesions seem to do well with my YAG (non-Q) laser and laser pigmented lesions need excision. If you doctor has experience and can show you their photos of similar lesions they have treated should be fine. ...Read more
