If a person pre-medicates w/xyzal & zantac, (ranitidine) can they take an nsaid drug, if that drug has caused minor hives in the past? Get skin reaction only.
Possibly: Both xyzal (levocetirizine) & zantac have anti-histamine effects & may decrease or eliminate a mild reaction to nsaid. However, this can be dangerous. Repeat exposures to something you are allergic to can be more severe, including breathing & swallowing difficulties, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or mouth. 6 classes of nsaids exist; you may not be allergic to other NSAID classes. An allergist may help a lot. ...Read more

Will taking daily xyzal (levocetirizine) & Zantac help protect me from allergic reactions to meds? Am allergic to so many now that I'm afraid of everything.
Xyzal (levocetirizine) & Zantac: Xyzal (levocetirizine) is an antihistamine & zantac a stomach acid reducer. While the former would be helpful with drugs that elicit a histaminic response the latter would help with drugs that inhibit prostaglandins (eg. Nsaids). There are various other pathways that lead to drug effects and side-effects, therefore xyzal (levocetirizine) & zantac would not offer universal protection against drug side-effects. Indeed no drug will. ...Read more

Yes: There are now 4 types of histamine receptors. Zantac (ranitidine) acts on the h2 receptor resulting in blocking stomach acid thereby treating heartburn. Allergies are treated with h1 blocking type medications including claritin, (loratadine) zyrtec and allegra. Some medications have both actions to block both h1 and h2 receptor. For anaphylaxis, zantac can be added for it's effect on blood vessels. ...Read more

But if you have stopped the advil zantac (ranitidine) will help any irritation causing the discomfort to heal more quickly than it would do without any treatment. ...Read more
Uncommon: Zantac (ranitidine) is an h2 receptor blocker (a different histamine receptor). A very common side effect of Zantac (ranitidine) is nausea, GI upset and diarrhea. If you are experiencing these, then it is not an allergy but rather a side effect of the medication. Although an allergy is very unusual for this medication, it is still a possibility. See an allergist. ...Read more
In general or in you: Axid & Zantac (ranitidine) are 2 of many h2 blockers used to treat heartburn. As such, the manufacturer of Axid will tell you that Axid is better than zanac while the manufacturer of Zantac (ranitidine) will tell you differently (of course!). In large groups of patients, both are equally effective since they both work in same fashion. However, you may like one more than other (think of chevy vs dodge vs ford). ...Read more
