It depends.: The appearance on x-ray is highly variable depending upon the angle the x-ray was taken at as well as your body position at the time. Unless you have had trauma or have a congenital anomaly, it is unlikely to be more then artifact. Radiologists are well trained in deciphering this issue and they're read of the x-ray will be the most important factor in interpretation. ...Read more

If the symptom (pain) is disabling or keeps you from doing usual activities, you could use further investigation. Rib sprain/bruise (from trauma), liver problems, and other problems can arise.
