Xanax Occasional Use
I have prescription for .25mg of Xanax (alprazolam) I use occasionally, like 2-4 times a month. Can I become dependent? Don't feel so just curious.
If you use your medicine this rarely, it is not likely you will become dependent on it. You can never say never,
Dependency normally follows frequent, high dosing. The body may change in response to this, and withdrawal occurs when the medicine is stopped.
Other people's comments are welcome as this is an important topic. ...Read more
Alprazolam is a short acting benzodiazepine, it does not last long in the system . So when used regularly with multiple doses to treat anxiety, it is associated with inter-dose withdrawal, tolerance and a resulting increase level of baseline anxiety. So in anxiety clinics, we use it only in cases of " flight , dentist or other infrequent anxieties, ...Read more
How often do you see paradoxical reactions to Valium and xanax (alprazolam)? Is it often or infrequent
Not very common: A paradoxical reaction to a med is one that causes the opposite of usual expected effect. In a benzodiazepine it would be anxiety, insomnia, over-stimulation or agitation. If this occurs, one would suspect an unidentified underlying problem as associative cause (such as bipolar disorder, thyroid disease, drug abuse). In any case, discontinuation would be indicated & a search for other causes made. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

I just started using a natural progesterone cream. Is there any interaction taking an occasional Xanax (alprazolam) along with the cream?
No: There are no known interactions between the two. However if more than 'occasional, ' xanax (alprazolam) is not the greatest treatment for anxiety. In addition, if both drugs are prescribed, your pharmacy will automatically check all your prescriptions against each other for interactions and let you know before you even take one. If one is not prescribed, you shouldn't be taking it. Talk to your doctor. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Is it ok to take 0.25mg Xanax to temper occasional anxiousness due to newly prescribed Adderall XR 30mg?
Best not: An initial dose of 30mg Adderal would be expected to cause some anxiousness. Best talk to your provider about possibly a lower dose. Xanax does not interact with Adderal in a bad way, it's just best to address the root of the problem. If you find you need 30mg, the side effects are likely to diminish with time. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Occasionally take a small dose of Xanax (alprazolam) in morning for anxiety. I'm a social drinker and enjoy a glass of wine in the evening. Any problem with this?
I'm on .25 mg Xanax daily. My doctor said at this dose an occasional beer was safe but everything I've heard says otherwise. Is it really okay?
Why risk it: I generally advise against combining this class of medication with alcohol as its sedating effects will be compounded. Someone may tolerate this combination, but why risk it? Additionally, xanax is not a great anxiety medication for daily use, as its effects are very short lived, has a high addiction potential, and can ultimately result in even greater anxiety. ...Read more

I drink daily. Sometimes a glass or two of wine...occasionally I binge on rum. I take 2 mg alprazolam (xanax) for 10 years. Last week ER for abd pain.
Not a good idea.:
I highly recommend limiting alcohol intake.
Co-administration of benzodiazepines with alcohol intake can cause very serious problems. Such as sedation, somnolence, even apnea.
Your prescriber should be made aware of this, and non-sedating medications should be used.
For abdominal pain specifically, it could be due to reflux, ulcer, pancreatic pathology or other causes of abdominal pain. -GL ...Read more
