I am taking elavil, nuvigil, remeron, and Xanax (alprazolam) for anxiety/depression/chronic daily fatigue. The first 3 have me in a fog. Will weaning off help me?

Yes: Weaning off medication may help. Nuvigil is not usually sedating or causing "fog", the three other medications could. Discuss adjusting medication with treating physician, it is not safe to abruptly stop all of these medications. ...Read more

My doctor prescribed me Xanax (alprazolam) for depression/anxiety. Is that effective?

My doctor prescribed me Xanax (alprazolam) for depression/anxiety. Is that effective?

Depends on what you: mean by effective. Xanax (alprazolam) will reduce anxiety short-term, but does not really have any significant beneficial effect on depression. Like other benzodiazepines, Xanax (alprazolam) causes physical dependency and tolerance, with a requirement for more and more medication, doing less and less over time. Antidepressant medications and psychotherapy are better ways to treat both conditions. Best if used short-term. ...Read more

Could I take Xanax (alprazolam) and Ritalin? Have anxiety/depression/add w/o hyperactivity and the Ritalin makes me somewhat irritable. Also take Prozac 40mg.

Could I take Xanax (alprazolam) and Ritalin? Have anxiety/depression/add w/o hyperactivity and the Ritalin makes me somewhat irritable. Also take Prozac 40mg.

Short-acting Ritalin (methylphenidate): works 20-60 min. after a dose, peaks at 1-2 hours & wears off in 3-4 hours. Irritability & anxiety are either side effects or rebound effects as dose wears off. Multiple daily doses must be taken 30 minutes before the prior dose wears off. Long- acting stimulants or non-stimulants that last 24/7 after 4-6 wks. are preferable, even for ADHD-Primarily Inattentive Type. Talk to your psychiatrist. ...Read more

Tried ssri/xanax for depression/anxiety, bad reactions. I heard wellbutrin (bupropion) works on different brain chemicals than ssri's. Can wellbutrin (bupropion) help?

Wellbutrin (bupropion): Wellbutrin does work on different neurotransmitters than SSRI's - specifically norepinephrine and dopamine. That said, you mentioned using Xanax (alprazolam) in the past - and Wellbutrin does have an "activating" effect for many people. So, it's probably not the best option for you. I'd suggest seeing a psychiatrist to talk over all of the options available (sometimes dosing is the key). Good luck! ...Read more

Can Xanax alprazolam also help with depression as well as anxiety and panic disorder?

Can Xanax alprazolam also help with depression as well as anxiety and panic disorder?

Maybe, but danger: Upjohn originally proposed xanax (alprazolam) in the 1970's as an antidepressant, showing effectiveness like tricyclics. The fda only allowed it as an anti-anxiety agent "that doesn't cause depression" [like others do]. It's a benzodiazepine; it may have some antidepressant effects but isn't effective alone. Induces dependency very easily and is hard to get off of. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22786504. ...Read more

I am taking citalopram 20 mg once a day for a month now but dont really see a diffrence in my depression or anxiety. i was thinking Xanax (alprazolam) might help?

Give it time: Depression/anxiety medications in that class tend to take at least 4-6 weeks to start working. You may be a candidate for a higher dose or an additional medication, though, if you aren't feeling ANY change at 4 weeks. Check back in with your doc and let him/her know how you're feeling. Do yourself a favor, and stay away from the xanax (alprazolam). ...Read more

What is the safest natural supplement for anxiety and depression. That i can take with xanax (alprazolam)?

None: If you are taking xanax (alprazolam), (alprazolam) chances are there will be no extra benefit from any supplement because none would compare with that. There are different supplements that can be used in anxiety - valerian root, 5-htp for example, but the safety of those with xanax (alprazolam) has not been established. ...Read more
