Alprazolam is a short acting benzodiazepine, it does not last long in the system. So when used regularly with multiple doses to treat anxiety, it is associated with inter-dose withdrawal, tolerance and a resulting increase level of baseline anxiety. So in anxiety clinics, we use it only in cases of " flight, dentist or other infrequent anxieties, ...Read more
Take Xanax (alprazolam). 5 mg & amitriptyline 12.5mg HS for sleep. Is it ok to take st johns wort in the morning to help with positive mood?
I am prescribed. 50mg Xanax (alprazolam) 3/daily, 75mg Amitriptyline, and 50mg Trazadone. I'm 6'1, 232 male. Is this safe?
OVERLAPPING MEDS: The combo of Meds you are on looks like you are being treated for anxiety and depression. Xanax (alprazolam) is short acting for anxiety. Trazadone and amitriptyline are long acting for anxiety and depression but are very similar and both cause weight gain. I would taper trazadone and start cymbalta. You need full lab work up including TFTS. Also a sleep study to rule out sleep apnea.See 1 more doctor answer
NO: Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant for depression and some forms of anxiety, sometimes used for chronic pain or migraine. Xanax (alprazolam) is a triazolobenzodiazepine or a benzodiazepine with an extra triazole ring structure. It is quite addicting and has a short half-life. It is used for panic, with or without agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder and for anxiety associated with chemotherapy.
Does Amitriptyline make Xanax (alprazolam) not work as well if taken closely together? How far apart should I take it?
Not related: The only effect of taking both close together is an increased risk of sedation.
Can I take amitriptyline and xanax (alprazolam) simultaneously? I'm prescribed both but usually wait a few hours between different doses.
Talk to your doctor: Both medications can be sedating. When combined there is an increased sedating effect. It depends upon your age and the dose of your medication and your overall health in order to determine if it is safe to combine the two. Talk to your doctor for the safest answer to your question.
Yes, in low doses: They will have additive sedation and you need individual guidance from a physician, but they are not inherently dangerous together.

Hi Doctor, I'm taking amitriptyline 10mg every day (bed time - 10mg). I would like to know if I can take Xanax (alprazolam) 25mg this morning as I feel anxious. Thanks for your help?
1 + 1 May Equal 10: Look, getting in the habit of taking this & that for that & this is not generally a good idea. Sure, take a Xanax (alprazolam) if you need to, but if you find yourself taking them more than a couple times a month you need help. Plus I don't know what the amitriptyline is for (pain? Depressiion?) & you should know what might be making you anxious and deal with it (again, get help). Side effects add up. Do the math.
Dr gave amitriptyline 50mg for pain & insomnia. Seems to help some w/pain, not so much for insomnia. Is higher dose safe w/citalopram& 0.5 xanax (alprazolam)? Ty

I take hydrocodone, cyclobenzaprine, amitriptyline, xanax, (alprazolam) and cymbalta. Xanax (alprazolam) as needed, cymbalta brand new - causing nausea. Can I take ondansetron?
Wouldn't recommend: You are already on several drugs which inhibit serotonin reuptake, increasing their levels - amitriptylene, Cymbalta (duloxetine) and cyclobenzaprine all have that potential, and ondansetron does it big time. This can result in the serotonin syndrome which is dangerous and even potentially fatal. All of these drugs also produce sedation. I would talk with your provider and pharmacist about safety of this.
I cannot get more that 2-3 hours of sleep every night. I havetried all the natural routes and had elavil, valium, xanax (alprazolam). Also, there is no psychological component. Nothing is helping. What should I do?
What's a good equivalent to elavil? I have severe anxiety and slight insomnia and am prescribed 3mg of Xanax a day and 50mg of elavil at night. I've been on Xanax for years and it works for me. I've just recently been prescribed elavil and it does help me
Elavil (amitriptyline): Elavil is an old antidepressant used for fibromyalgia. Lexapro is a newer antidepressant with similar qualities that helps with sleep. Cymbalta works for pain in some people. You are on a fairly high dose of xanax (alprazolam). Maybe you should try klonapin, which last longer...See 1 more doctor answer
I am taking elavil, nuvigil, remeron, and Xanax (alprazolam) for anxiety/depression/chronic daily fatigue. The first 3 have me in a fog. Will weaning off help me?
Yes: Weaning off medication may help. Nuvigil is not usually sedating or causing "fog", the three other medications could. Discuss adjusting medication with treating physician, it is not safe to abruptly stop all of these medications.See 1 more doctor answer

Are there risks related to sun exposure when using any of the following: hydrocodone, cyclobenzaprine, amitriptyline, cymbalta, or xanax (alprazolam)?
Here it is: 1. Amitriptyline could increase the risk of overheating and photosensitivity. 2. cyclobenzaprine could increase the risk of photosensitivity only. 3. Cymbalta has no risks. 4. hydrocodone has no risks. 5. Xanax (alprazolam) could increase the risk of photosensitivity only. Do not stop taking any prescribed medication without first talking to your doctor.
