Xanax Alprazolam Ativan
Alprazolam is a short acting benzodiazepine, it does not last long in the system. So when used regularly with multiple doses to treat anxiety, it is associated with inter-dose withdrawal, tolerance and a resulting increase level of baseline anxiety. So in anxiety clinics, we use it only in cases of " flight, dentist or other infrequent anxieties, ...Read more
I need medication to help me thru a c.T. Scan, I have tried haildol, xanax, (alprazolam) ativan, with no success, due to extreme claustrophobia! It is vital!
How much med can a: Woodchuck chuck. The failure to get a response from those meds may be dose related - not enough was provided or not via the best route. Sometimes intravenous medication has a more instant and significant response. Valium and Ativan (lorazepam) can be provided that way. Cognitive therapy, emdr (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), and hypnosis are non-med alternatives. Consider anesthesia consult. ...Read more
How to know if you had an allergic reaction to anxiety meds. Through iv? Xanax, (alprazolam) ativan, and morphine for chest? Arms feel heavy? I went to ER 4 times.
3: 3 CNS depressants that provoke dependency, tolerance, and can cause death for respiratory depression when combined unwisely or at a certain dose. Your question is referred to heaviness in arms and allergic reactions, signs of which I don t see in your description, possibly missing the real point. Ask your dr and report your symptoms, you might need some meds adjustment or change; maybe detox. ...Read more
Both: Both medications can be addictive. Xanax (alprazolam) acts quickly which is why it is desired by most people. Ativan acts relatively quickly as well but not as immediate as xanax (alprazolam). Both medications can be addicting and should only be taken as needed or as advised by your physician. ...Read more
Do not do it: Both medications are in the benzodiazepine family. If injected they go fast to brain centers for breathing and heart rate. These should only be given IV in hospital setting with careful monitoring of breathing and heart rate. Iv Ativan (lorazepam) is often used in ers for seizures. Oral form is rapidly absorbed and can get into the system in a few minutes. ...Read more
Withdrawl: The issues of withdrawl are very prominant if you are taking these benzodiazepines for a long period. If you wish to stop I would recommend you discussing thsi with your phsyician and work on a gradula dose reduction plan. Do not stop aburptly! ...Read more
My dr switched me over from Xanax (alprazolam) to ativan apparently equivalent in dosage, with no taper is this safe?
Which is better for someone with severe anxiety that effects thir entire life. Xanax (alprazolam) or ativan? Which would help most.
For severe anxiety: I would not be relying only on pharmaceuticals, but would also want to work on the specific anxieties the patient has. Cognitive therapy, mindfulness meditation, dynamic psychotherapies, all help the person learn about his/her own triggers and ways of dealing with them. Ssri antidepressants seem better at preventing panic attacks than episodic benzodiazepines (whether using xanax (alprazolam) or ativan). ...Read more
Can I safely use Ambien for sleep, then Xanax (alprazolam) during the day for anxiety? Can I safely switch between Xanax (alprazolam) or Ativan If I find one works better?
Your question sounds: Like there may not be a prescribing physician involved with this, or at least you don't say anything about the advice of that physician. Benzodiazepines are not necessarily the best treatment for chronic anxiety states like generalized anxiety disorder, panic and especially not PTSD. Antidepressants work without producing tolerance and with much less of a risk of dependency. Talk to the prescriber ...Read more
Any better med for sedation other than benzos? I"ve tried xanax, (alprazolam) klonopin, & ativan. None work great on me but I've never had more than 1mg of each
I have severe insomnia. I also have thyroiditis. I take Xanax (alprazolam) or ativan for sleep. Sometimes it works and sometimes no. What can I do?
Is Xanax (alprazolam) or ativan safer for long term use? & would either of these have the possibility to cause any cardiac effects like cardiac arrest? I
Xanax/Ativan: Not recommended for long-term use. If u r already prescribed one or the other, keeping the dose therapeutic & as prescribed, should not harm your cardiovascular system. I would recommend talking to your prescribing doc. About alternate medications for anxiety if u will be using long-term. ...Read more
No: You shouldn't. It is irrational to use two benzodiazepines at one time. If it is being prescribed, your prescriber may not be aware of the dangers (or irrationality) of using two potent benzos together. If it is not being prescribed, you are clearly having benzodiazepine abuse. This combination produces significant physical dependency, and should not be stopped abruptly but tapered. Seek help. ...Read more
Wondering how to go about asking my doctor to try me on Xanax (alprazolam) instead of ativan since I have to take too much ativan to and it still doen't work fully?
Doesn't work fully?: I am wondering what you mean by that. What are you hoping Ativan or xanax (alprazolam) will fully treat? Bipolar disorder should be treated with a mood stabilizer. There are various kinds and most will help a great deal with anxiety as well. Chronic anxiety is best treated with meds other than xanax (alprazolam), which often creates more anxiety when it leaves your system than you may have had to begin with! ...Read more
Can I just switch from 0.5mg of Xanax (alprazolam) to 1mg ativan without any problems? Been on Xanax (alprazolam) at HS for a long time. Md thinks I need something longer act.
Why the switch?: I'm unsure if you're asking if you can switch w/o any adverse effects or it's more "dr. Wants to change rx" question. Either way, these are (short acting) benzos & may help you fall asleep, but not stay asleep. You may also wish to google "benzo equivalency chart" and you can see what's=to what. There are more modern drugs used worldwide for sleep tx. (z-drugs) is your rx for anxiety or insomnia? ...Read more
I suffer from extreme insomnia, my doctor switched me frm. 25 Xanax (alprazolam) to 1mg Ativan, I took at 7pm...it's now 1:48 am would it be ok to take the xanax (alprazolam)?
Advice for 9 h. ago: I never understand why people are not asking these questions when the doctor gives them the prescription, or the pharmacist dispenses it. They are your primary sources of information, or should be. Insomnia, especially when severe, is an indicator of an underlying problem, and not a diagnosis itself. Benzos should only be used short-term in most people. I couldn't say whether its ok or not. ...Read more
0.5mg Klonopin = 0.5mg Xanax (alprazolam) = 0.5mg Ativan in terms of strength? Which is "best" for fear for flying/claustrophobia on airplane? I can't tell.
No: Those equivalences dont' work. But you should be speaking about this with your prescriber, who knows you and your particular fear of flying, as well as your medication history and your need for length of medication action. ...Read more

You are asking the: Wrong doctor this question, because I am on the other side of that argument. I think we would all be better off if this drug were not on the market. Xanax (alprazolam) is rapidly absorbed and rapidly excreted, which creates a far more abuse-prone drug than Lorazepam (ativan). If it is very occasional panic attacks or anxiety, and you take it rarely, it's fine. For chronic use, Ativan or Klonopin are better. ...Read more
No: Absolutely not, but don't take any medication outside of your doctor's directions. ...Read more
Usually NOT...: Although Ativan (lorazepam) and xanax (alprazolam) are in the same class of agents, pharmacologically, they have different "half-lives", the time it takes to metabolize them, and there is some evidence that they may have different affinity for certain benzodiazepine receptor subtypes. This is why one may work better for generalized anxiety while the other may work better for "panic" anxiety. ...Read more

I know ativan and Xanax (alprazolam) are in the same drug class but what are some of the differences between the 2 drugs?
Ativan vs Xanax (alprazolam): Both Ativan (lorazepam) and xanax (alprazolam) are benzodiazepine tranquilizers. The main differences clinically are that Ativan is longer-acting and slightly more sedating than xanax. Most agree that xanax is more potent than Ativan on a milligram-for-milligram basis, and probably more addictive. However, both are considered high-potency benzodiazepines and both can lead to drug dependence. ...Read more

Tell Dr.: Instead of worrying about the medication not prescribed by your treating dr. Showing up in the urine, you need to be honest with the dr. And let them know you took a different medication from someone else? You need to be honest and have a trusting relationship with your treating Dr. Or you will only be fooling yourself. ...Read more
