Lots of bad things: Including seizures and delirium (dt's), as well as elevation of blood pressure to where heart damage or stroke may occur. Xanax (alprazolam) is a benzo, and has a more severe withdrawal syndrome because it is so short-acting. Benzos should never be abruptly stopped after chronic use, but should be tapered or replaced with a longer-acting drug that is tapered. Anticonvulsants can also help. ...Read more

See your MD: Your dr needs to evaluate you and explain the treatment plan. You may be able decrease the dose gradually over a 3 - 4 week period. Some mds may prefer to switch the xanax (alprazolam) to long acting "benzo" med from which you can taper off more comfortably. Depends on the dose: Benzodiazepines differ from each other in their half lifes, which is the time it takes for the body to eliminate half of the medication. Short acting forms are more addicting because they are eliminated faster and as they wear off the person feels it and wants the next dose.
