My 9 year old daughter fell and her scooter landed on her thumb took her for a X-ray and the doctor said it was all fine but now she has got a clickin?

A normal x-ray: doesn't always mean "all fine", just that there's no apparent bone fracture or joint dislocation. The fingers are very complicated structures with small muscles, tendons and ligaments. If these are swollen, injured or out of alignment, they can cause pain, swelling, popping, clicking & other issues. I suggest that you take her to her pediatrician for follow up. Thumb arthritis: Not sure what the question is here , but could develop post-traumatic arthritis after a fracture, particularly if untreated. You should see an orthopaedic surgeon for an exam and x-rays. Bracing, meds, injections, or potential surgery may be needed. ...Read more

Fell this morning while running. Mild pain in wrist/thumb area. Can move fingers and wrist freely. Little swelling. Do i need an x-ray?

Fell this morning while running. Mild pain in wrist/thumb area. Can move fingers and wrist freely. Little swelling. Do i need an x-ray?

A good idea: Many minor wrist sprains can lead 2 a fracture of the navicular. Many times it will b more evident on an orthopedic exam, then x-rays may or not b done. True early images of occult navicular fractures r not positive, but if an orthopedic surgeon feels strongly about the findings a cast 4 +/- 2 wks.And then new images with the cast off will show the fx.Due 2 bone absorption in the perifracture erea. ...Read more

Occupational therapy: It seems that you are already seeing a neurologist and they have ruled out common neurological causes of wrist and hand pain. See an occupational therapist who may be able to help. Diagnosing such conditions can be challenging and sometimes take several months and repeated follow up. In the meanwhile pain management is recommended and various classes of different analgesics may have to be tried. ...Read more

About 3/4 months ago I was taken to A&E with a suspected scaphoid fracture I was seen by 2 doctors and was put in a thumb spica (not a cast) for 10 days because they suspected the scaphoid was broken. I later had another appointment for an X-ray to decid

Varies: Scaphoid fractures are often difficult to fully assess with X-ray. Often a ct scan or MRI is used if someone has persistent pain and X-rays look ok. Sometimes rather than doing a lot of initial studies, we will treat a patient in a splint if they have an exam and X-rays could be consistent with a scaphoid fracture, but then dc their splint if their exam and X-ray normalize. ...Read more

I slammed thumb in car door 2 days ago. Went to ER X-ray revealed 2 breaks. I see orthopedic hand spec tomorrow. Will i get a cast at that visit?

Usually, yes: It does depend a bit on where the breaks are, as well as how swollen your hand/thumb still is, but usually, the swelling is down so it is safe to cast, and you will be followed for the next several weeks to monitor healing. Depending on career, hand-ed-ness, and also nature of breaks, the specialist might recommend surgical repair. ...Read more

I fell on my hand last February, and was diagnosed with scaphoid bone bruise. X-ray was inconclusive. I had hand therapy and improved somewhat, but am having worsening pain at the base of my thumb on the palmar side (not the snuff box). It is a deep ache,

Repeat x-ray: I would recommend reevaluation with another x-ray -- this late type of pain after a remote injury can indicate damage to articular cartilage in the wrist in a number of different areas like the articulation between the the thumb metacarpal bone and another wrist bone called the trapezium -- repeat evaluation by an orthopedist specializing in hand is indicated ...Read more
