Do I have to fast for a hba1c blood test?

Do I have to fast for a hba1c blood test?

Not really: The aic test generally tells us what has been going on with your sugar over the past 3 months approximately. One does not really have to fast for it, but it is best done fasting in my opinion, because your doctor will probably want to see a fasting blood sugar at the same time to help manage your diabetes. Often a lipid panel is done at the same time, which requires one to be fasting. ...Read more

Do you have to fast the day before a hba1c test?

Do you have to fast the day before a hba1c test?

No: The hemoglobin A1c is a measure of the amount of hemoglobin that is bound to glucose (blood sugar) in red blood cells. Red blood cells live about 120 days, so the A1c gives an idea of diabetic control over 3 months. Eating on the day of the test will make no difference. Be sure, though, that no other tests, such as fasting lipid panel or fasting chemistries, have been ordered along w a1c. ...Read more

Hba1c test is within range but fasting blood sugar is 7.2. Can u get a true answer when checked after 12 hrs of eating?

Diabetes: Hi. Of the 4 means to diagnose diabetes, A1c and non-fasting (random) glucose are the least sensitive; glucose tolerance test and fasting glucose are the most sensitive. Your fasting serum glucose of 7.2 is frankly diagnostic of diabetes, and at the very least, impaired glucose tolerance. It should be repeated for confirmation. Fasting should only require 8 hours of not eating. Healthy lifestyle! ...Read more
