He had history of gastric ulcer when he was in 5th grade. Now, he defecated once with painless, bright red blood. He also has cough for 5 days?
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

Is it more likely to vomit or poop blood from an ulcer? Which is more concerning? And why would your body do one or the other?
Depends where ulcer: Brisk bleeding may result in hematochezia (passing blood per rectum), but more likely present as hematemesis (vomiting blood) or melena (black stool). Patients with bleeding ulcers above the end of stomach (pylorus) will likely vomit blood sooner than it will be seen as rectal effluent, whereas ulcers bleeding far down from the pylorus may first manifest their bleeding in stool. Both are serious. ...Read more

Doc, why does it happen that peptic ulcer is most common in blood group O and gastric carcinoma in blood group A??!!
Minor mystery: This remains a puzzler, but is probably important that helicobacter binds to the blood group antigens on the cells of the inner surface of the stomach, and is the not-altogether-understood factor in the development of both illnesses. Perhaps some of my teammates in gastroenterology can clarify. ...Read more

Urgent: You don't need me to tell you that bloody emesis is not a good thing. She needs aggressive investigation, which may include endoscopy, mri, ct, and barium swallow. Bad on and off cough, speciall at night and early mornings, end up vomiting, took augumentin, chest xray was normal, blood test was normal. What can be causing it?
Pertussis: My best 'guess' would be pertussis or 'whooping cough' which is classically associated with vomiting after coughing. Coughs from this illness can be spasmodic and can last for weeks. Given your tests are reassuring, I think dealing with symptoms is the best treatment: Try regulating what you eat at when-- cough is worse at night. Try anti-cough medicines. Ginger tea might help too. See a doc also. ...Read more

Really intense cough: All the parts of your body are connected so if you have a really intense cough it is not surprising that you feel it rattling other parts of your body. Very unlikely: It sounds like you are on the right track. The PPIs have helped, but you still have some residual reflux symptoms. This is common and may be improved by diet or other lifestyle approaches (elevate head of bed, etc). However, with persistent symptoms you should have an upper endoscopy (EGD) to assess the esophagus and stomach on treatment, and this procedure would also screen for gastric cancer. ...Read more
