Is contracting and living with Lewy bodies dementia (alzheimers) terminal?

Is contracting and living with Lewy bodies dementia (alzheimers) terminal?

Eventually, yes: Lbd is not the same as alzheimers. However, there also is no cure, and it is progressive - either slow or rapid. Here's a link: http://www.Lbda.Org/content/role-palliative-and-hospice-care-in-lbd. Hope you find help! ...Read more

What type of mutation causes dementia with lewd bodies?

What type of mutation causes dementia with lewd bodies?

Allele, not a mutant: It's not well understood, but often appears in those w/ Parkinson's, so a link with the PARK11 gene has been studied. Like Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, most cases since not all end up w/ it LBD is not thought to be strongly inheredited. Yet LBD risk is heightened w/ inheritance of an allele. What predisposes someone to Lewy body dementia?

Lewy Body risk: We don't have a clear answer for this yet. About 10% of cases are a familial variant and are directly inherited from one parent. The rest may be related to a combination of genes and environmental factors. But the main associated brain change (presence of clumps of alpha-synuclein protein) are also seen in other types of dementia, and so the underlying cause may be similar. ...Read more
