I woke up and can't move my neck to the left side. What is the reason for this?

Pinched Nerve/Muscle: Most times back pain that is sudden onset will resolve. You should use anti-inflammatory meds like ibuprofen, aleve around the clock and even tylenol (acetaminophen) to help. If this does not resolve you should see your doctor for other options. If it still does not resolve, I would recommend to see a spine specialist for a full evaluation and testing. You may need to get an MRI to see inside. ...Read more

If the stiffness continues, a short course of muscle relaxers might be appropriate too. ...Read more

So that would be nearly impossible to do to yourself in your sleep. More likely, you may have degenerative discs (discs with wear and tear) in your neck which have been aggravated. The neck/cervical: Spine joints, like all joints, are bathed in an oily-like substance called synovial fluid which facilitates smooth movement. However, since you only mentioned a brief history the other component is a thorough physical examination which could be performed by your doctor.
