Been on Prozac (fluoxetine) for 5 days. 20mg. If i go off it will I have withdrawal?

No withdrawal: You are not likely to have withdrawal symptoms from prozac, (fluoxetine) because it's an extremely long-acting medication. In essence, it tapers itself - and at times is even used to help taper from other ssri's. Please ask your doctor about this. In an earlier question you mentioned your doctor had told you to stop the medication, but you didn't say why. ...Read more

Didn't have Prozac (fluoxetine) for a week until yesterday. Today is my 2nd day of being back on it & I still have the withdrawal effects. When will they go away?

You are lucky you: don't take Paxil or Effexor, (venlafaxine) as they are known to create even more havoc than Prozac. Prozac has a longer half-life, and seems to take longer to work its way into your system. These meds interact with the nervous system at deep levels, so be patient. The actual anti-depressant effect can sometimes take up to a month to fully manifest. ...Read more

If you run out of prozac, (fluoxetine) how long do you have before you get Prozac (fluoxetine) withdrawal?

If you run out of prozac, (fluoxetine) how long do you have before you get Prozac (fluoxetine) withdrawal?

It depends.: Prozac (fluoxetine) has active metabolites that have similar effect as prozac (fluoxetine). These breakdown chemicals will attenuate withdrawal effects, theoretically delaying withdrawal, if any. These effects may be present for several days to as long as two weeks. Make an effort to promptly renew your prescription and contact your physician. ...Read more

Can withdrawal symptoms of Prozac lay dormant until about a month later?

Prozac withdrawal: Prozac has a very long half-life, about 16 days, which means the blood level drops gradually over several weeks. Therefore, in about a month's time, symptoms may re-appear for which you took this med initially, eg, irritability, anxiety, depression. Stopping Prozac should always be tapered slowly under doctor supervision for this reason. Check with prescribing doctor to review how you're feeling. ...Read more

I am switching from 30 mg cymbalta daily to prozac. How do I go about switching while minimizing the cymbalta withdrawals?

Good question: The physician who prescribed Cymbalta should be able to tell you the procedure to change over. Ordinarily the taper dose is gradual. The physician will outline how to quit the Cymbalta slowly while adding a dose of Prozac slowly as appropriate. ...Read more

Will decreasing prozac (fluoxetine) from 80 to 60mg cause withdrawal? On PZ for OCD 3 mnths total, at 80 only for 1 mnth. No S/E at 60, lots persisting at 80

Maybe a little: Of all the SSRI medications, Prozac (fluoxetine) has among the lowest risks of SSRI withdrawal syndrome (mostly consisting of dizziness or light-headed spacey feeling). That said, any SSRI dose reduction might cause some people to experience withdrawal syndrome. The risk of significant withdrawal issues is lessened with short exposure (e.g. only one month) at the higher dose. ...Read more

My dr took me off Pristiq and put me on Prozac to help taper down, however, I've still had awful withdrawals- increased anxiety, paranoia, "brain zaps", amplified negative feelings, etc. Is there a point I should be "concerned" enough to seek medical care

My dr took me off Pristiq and put me on Prozac to help taper down, however, I've still had awful withdrawals- increased anxiety, paranoia, "brain zaps", amplified negative feelings, etc. Is there a point I should be "concerned" enough to seek medical care

Talk to doctor: In my practice, with my patients, I have never taken a patient off Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) cold turkey. I always recommend tapering down gently, to avoid the withdrawal symptoms you describe. Talk to your treating physician about restarting the Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) and tapering. ...Read more
