I just got surgery on my toe because of an ingrown nail. What causes it and what are the treatment options?

Nails too short: Your great toe tends to be crowded while walking by the side of the shoe and the long 2nd toe in a pinched fashion. If the nail is cut short enough that the edge is buried by surrounding tissue, the pinching drives the nail edge down creating a small cut.Over time, this will become inflamed. If the nail edge is allowed to grow longer, skin passes under the nail during compression and no cut occurs. ...Read more

What can I do to correct my bulging armpits? My armpits are kind of convex shped which look really ugly when i wear a sleevless top. What are the medical procedures available to correct this and the treatment duration and costs associated with this?

Sorry : Sorry it took so long to answer this question. The treatment options for this region depend largely on two things, skin tone and lipodystrophy (excess fat). Thus, things like age, current weight, and weight gain/loss history are important in determine treatment options. A great outcome occurs when the appropriate treatment is paired with the problem at hand. Liposuction is the most likely option, but this is only a good option when skin elasticity is intact. Good skin elasticity is generally present in those who are relatively young and who have not had dramatic shifts in weight. When one loses excess weight, the skin may not rebound. So when liposuction is performed, only yields great results when the skin retracts. If skin elasticity is poor (i.e. If stretch marks are present) direct excision of skin and involved fat may be required. A physical exam would be required to give a more detailed assessment. A free consultation can be attained from most plastic surgeons. Liposuction is generally $1000 to $2000 per region. Direct excision may cost $1500 to $3000 depending on the location of your physician and experience. Stick with surgeons who are board certified by the american board of plastic surgeons. Hope this helps! ...Read more

I have fungus under some of my toe nails. Are there alternative treatments (home) to get rid of it?

Maybe?: The reason you hear so many different treatments for toenail fungus is because there is no perfect, sure-fire treatment that works 100% of the time. You can also try laser therapy, antifungal creams, paints, or even oral medications if your doctor deems you healthy enough to take them. ...Read more

If it's a deep puncture, and you irrigated and applied soap, you still may need to see a doctor to start oral antibiotics. ...Read more

I've had a dark brown area under my toe nail (which I was assuming was blood) for 3 months now no improvement. Takes up half toe nail. Treatment?

As you may already know, it can be only one off several different things. It is either blood, bacteria, fungus, dirt or a type of melanoma. Now that you know the options, you need to be examined. With the possibility of melanoma on the list, I would not delay the examination too long. ...Read more

You should be kicking with the inner side of your foot, not your toes. Better technique should help prevent this as well. Visit your PCP. ...Read more
