Hiv (Definition)

Hiv infection is caused by a retrovirus....This retrovirus binds to CD4 cells (for the most part). You may detect the virus by several different methods. An elisa test (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay). You may also detect it by doing a test referred to as a western blot (a gel protein electrophoresis). Thirdly by pcr (polymerase chain reaction) which ...Read more

My ELISA HIV test came up negative after 1month exposure. How accurate is this test?

90%: There's a period of time after a person is infected during which they won't test positive. This is called the “hiv window period.” The window period can be from 9 days to 3-6 months, depending on the person's body and on the HIV-test that's used. ...Read more

According to WHO, 6 weeks HIV test is conclusive (unless I miss understood it) then why CDC recommends 3 to 6 months for conclusive results?

The "Window Period": Window period is the time it takes lymphocytes to develop antibodies to an antigen. This is usually 4-6 weeks but can be as long as 3 months. By 3 months after exposure...97% of people will have antibodies to antigen. In rarer instances it may take up to 6 months to develop antibodies. After 6 months..99% of people exposed will have antibodies to viral antigens. Therefore the 3 to 6 months!!! ...Read more

I did 4th Generation HIV test after around 4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,14,15 weeks of an exposure. Is this 100% conclusive? can i get back safely to my wife

Sero-conversion: The whole concept of delayed sero-conversion dates back to old & sloppy tests. PCR testing now will show virus in the blood with or without antibodies. If you need to cling to the old adages...at 6 months..99.99% of the population will have developed antibodies after an exposure..thus the 6 month window. I believe a colleague of mine Lyssette Cardona, MD is in Dubai..she's one of the best!! ...Read more

What is the window period of HIV antibody tridot test in india?

What is the window period of HIV antibody tridot test in india?

HIV antibody Testing: You should have a valid answer by twelve weeks on this test. It is not the best test in an acute exposure. Your question also implies that you do not know that HIV infection can be prevented after a high risk exposure as long as the appropriate action is taken within 72 hours of exposure. This process known as post exposure prophylaxis is very effective at preventing infection. ...Read more

Window periods hiv test. I had 4 test hiv combo after 94 days negative. But my country state window period 6 month. Malaysia. ?

4 weeks. Believe it.: Only a few companies make most of the HIV tests used worldwide. The window period for the combo test (also called duo or 4th generation test) is the same everywhere, 4 weeks. That a particular health department or agency takes a conservative stance and promotes longer periods is a decision based on legalities, politics, and social context. I can't say why some agency in Malaysia says 6 months. ...Read more

Is it possible to have a false negative rapid HIV test well after window period (9 months after last possible exposure)? If so , why?

Is it possible to have a false negative rapid HIV test well after window period (9 months after last possible exposure)? If so , why?

Unlikely: When sufficient time has elapsed after one's last potential exposure, HIV tests are usually reliably positive if one is in fact infected. One has to be aware that the usual test looks for hiv-1, but there is also an hiv-2 which is far less common but could be in you and the standard test would not recognize it. ...Read more
