Yes: Methicillin resistant staph aureus (MRSA) can be deadly if the bacteria enters the blood stream. This very sticky bacteria can travel to the heart and destroy heart valves and heart muscle. Each skin infection increases the chance of this bacteria getting into the blood stream. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Is rubbing alcohol enough to kill staph after dressing a boil? (i usually wash briefly also to remove the smell, but want to make sure this is enough)
Peroxide is better: Alcohol is very toxic to skin, especially damaged skin. Hydrogen peroxide works well to kill any residual germs while causing less tissue damage. An antibiotic ointment may help as well (triple antibiotic ointments are available as generics equivalent to neosporin). Many experts believe thorough washing with good old soap and water (not briefly!) is as good or better than abx ointments. ...Read more

I'm infected with Staph aureus. I know, my bf may be colonized with a Staph by kissing. Can i get infected again by him when my treatment is over?
Wish I could tell: you no but yes you can get the bacteria to live on your skin again, which is impossible to guard against. You should not get infections all the time, unless there is something not 100% with your immune system -- but Staph is known to live on human skin, most of the time not causing any problems. Hopefully you will not get infections again. ...Read more
I am pretty much 100 percent sure that I have Staph infection and would like second opinion and get on treatment asap ?
Staph infection: I assume you talking about treatment of skin and soft tissue due to MRSA. It depends on how severe the infection is. With small skin abscess I& D is enough. If it is a big boil then it needs I&D and oral antibiotics. In case the infection is more extensive then IV antibiotics must be used. Choice of antibiotics depends on local resistance, labs and culture results and preference of the physician. ...Read more
