Will taking Prozac (fluoxetine) change my brain forever?

Will taking Prozac (fluoxetine) change my brain forever?

Maybe: It is thought that it is the resultant response of the brain to increased serotonin levels (and not simply increased serotonin alone) that leads to improvement. Examples include changes in number of eceptors or increased number of dendrites. These positive changes may remain after the medication is stopped. If your brain was not changed from a depressed state, you'd remain depressed. ...Read more

I take Prozac (20 mg/day) and ritalin (methylphenidate) (40 mg/day). Could longterm intake reduce my intelligence? I am very worried about changes in my brain chemistry

Brain changes: You would not lose intelligence from being on these medications. However, untreated depression and adhd would make it harder to perform well in school or in work. Ssri's may even evoke some positive brain changes -- such as increased neurogenesis in the hippocampus and overall neuron repair. http://tinyurl.com/d6b5s8c. ...Read more

How long until Prozac (fluoxetine) clears up "brain fog" so I can use my brain again?

How long until Prozac (fluoxetine) clears up "brain fog" so I can use my brain again?

Please clarify: Sorry, but I looked in my textbooks and "brain fog" isn't in there. So you'll have to go beyond colorful but uninformative phrases and describe what you actually mean by "brain fog." It would also be helpful to include in your post how long it's been since you COULD use your brain and WHY your doc is prescribing fluoxetine. "Brain fog" isn't on the list of FDA-approved indications for the drug. ...Read more

I have gone on and off Prozac (fluoxetine) several times over the past few years. Is this changing my brain chemistry? Is it bad for me?

Better to treat: Hi Amanda, there is controversy about this (particularly outside the scientific community). Within the community, there is agreement that depression itself changes the brain in undesirable ways, can be debilitating, and warrants treatment. If your depression is mild/moderate, and you prefer not to take meds, you can find significant relief through life style changes and therapy. Take good care. ...Read more

Does prozac (fluoxetine) really heal the brain in depression or does it just mask depression?

Does prozac (fluoxetine) really heal the brain in depression or does it just mask depression?

Can really help: Prozac (fluoxetine) acts to help normalize the levels chemicals in the brain that are responsible for mood. It can take 6 months to achieve sustained normal levels, and then tapering can be possible. But some people need it for ever because their brains cannot regulate the levels properly. Sometimes there are other causes of depression. and Prozac (fluoxetine) may help in that case, or it may not work. ...Read more
