My mom is 72 has breast cancer that spread to her brain she is reciving hyperbaric oxygen therapy has these large knots in her upper thighs im concern?

Of course you are!: The knots in her thighs could be breast cancer. It sounds like her cancer has spread to many places. The thighs aren't an area that will cause many problems, but her brain is a big concern. Have you talked to your mom about where she would like to die? That's a hard conversation, but a compassionate and loving thing to understand so you can plan together. Cherish this time with her. ...Read more

My grandmother is 83 she has cancer of the blood and now has blood clots in her legs. what can we do to save her any type of answer would be great.

My grandmother is 83 she has cancer of the blood and now has blood clots in her legs. what can we do to save her any type of answer would be great.

Be there to love her: Blood clots in the legs are often manageable with anticoagulants, and blood cancers in older folks are often very tame -- for example, many chronic lymphocytic leukemias stay harmless for decades. It's ultimately her choice as to how aggressively her illnesses are managed. Ignore all "pop" advice; if you see "natural healing" as adjuncts use an evidence-based practitioner. ...Read more

My 81-old brother has been dealing with severe itching on both arms and legs. In fact drawing blood and complete red bloches. He is a diabetic and takes insulin.

04/12/12 Extensive : 04/12/12 extensive itching about the body can be caused by many thuings. In the elderly, the most common cause is dry skin from insufficient bathing, and not enough moisturizers. It also could be a fragrance allergy to a chemical in the current soap, lotion, fabric softener, or detergent. Less commonly, it could be a drug reaction to a new pill, or a sign of liver, thyroid, kidney disease, or anemia. Diabetes itself can be associated with itchy skin. A thorough history and physical exam by a dermatologist should help determine what is causing the itching, along with some blood tests. ...Read more

Grandma 92yo does dialysis and takes medicine. She has pain in her leg and doctors suggested to cut her leg. It is very risky! what should we do?

Limb ischemia: Very poor arterial circulation leading to ulceration or gangrene must be the likely reason for her doc to make this decision. She is probably not a candidate for revascularization. Only pain will not prompt such a drastic treatment. ...Read more

My mother is 32 weeks pregnant with twins and has chronic hypertension tonight her Bp is 163/94 and her feet are huge does she need to go to the dr?

Yes, ...: Yes, of course, she needs to gyn-doc as soon as possible - preferably within 1-2 days or to ER as needed. In reality, especially in the U. S., I would assume she would be under a regular ob-care already and should not be seen with huge legs and hypertension while having a 32-week pregnancy. Best wish ... ...Read more

My grandmother collapsed and is in surgery for blood clot in her brain. what is her chance of survival. she is 79 years old.

Not enough info.: I'm so sorry she's ill! It is impossible to give you a precise answer, since we don't know the cause or extent of the damage, or her general condition before this happened. Since she is getting surgery, someone feels like that will improve her chances, which is good. Time will tell. When talking to the surgeon, have a list of questions ready and make sure you right down the answers, for later. ...Read more

Will amputation help my 87 year old mom? Her treatment included blood thinning medications. Her toe has turned black and the her dr. Says do nothing.

Toe black: Although this sounds like gangrene and a needed amputation , it may not be necessary. Waiting does nothing wrong. As a wise man said - you can always do surgery. What you can't do is undo it. See your podiatrist also - second thoughts never hurt anyone. ...Read more

My daughter has bronchiolitis and her oxygen saturation today fell to 92. After receiving several meds via nebulizer and her vein. Cause?

Mismatch: between areas in the lungs where the oxygen can get through constricted airways and those parts of the lung tissue where the most of the blood is circulating creates the drop in percentage of oxygenated hemoglobin (saturation). 92% is worrying, but if it does not drop any further, is not life-threatening in a 15 months old, as long as there is prompt access to care and adequate monitoring ...Read more

My friend who has forth stage breast cancer has fluid around her lungs, tumers inside her lungs and is tired. Could oxygen therapy help her at all?

If her oxygen is low: Oxygen level can be easily tested and so i would do that first. If it is low, supplemental oxygen can be quite helpful. If too much fluid, she may need to get treatment to remove the excess fluid, otherwise oxygen may not get to the lungs to cross to the blood where she needs it... ...Read more
