I'm on 6 day Medrol (methylprednisolone) dosepak for an MS relapse. How soon can I expect the steroids to start working?

I'm on 6 day Medrol (methylprednisolone) dosepak for an MS relapse. How soon can I expect the steroids to start working?

How are you taking?: I am curious to know how many miligrams you are taking daily for your MS relapse and how long your therapy will be. I say this because ideally you should feel some sort of relief by the end of the week. The dosepak tablets are 4mg and I do not think this would be strong enough for MS, unless you were prescribed Medrol (methylprednisolone) which can go up to 32mg tablets. See your doctor if no relief soon. ...Read more

How bad of rebound should I expect quiting tysabri (natalizumab) infusions due to several MS relapses attacking brain and stem. Can't take new meds due to health?

How bad of rebound should I expect quiting tysabri (natalizumab) infusions due to several MS relapses attacking brain and stem. Can't take new meds due to health?

Better analyze: Do not understand why if you have MS, it cannot be treated with medications, as there are 9 choices. If you stop Tysabri, (natalizumab) you are virtually guaranteed a relapse by 3-4 months, and even a severe rebound is possible, if a new medication is NOT started. You are about to engage in highly risky behavior. One caveat, are you sure that you have MS and not something else, such as Neuromyeilits Optica? ...Read more

Broke out in rash from plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) what are my alternatives. Also have thrush i believe from rednisone.. Can lupus go untreated without organ damage?

Depends: Alternatives depends on allergies, but did rash occur from sun exposure - Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) is a sun-sensitizer. Sulfasalazine is a consideration, but not all lupus requires treatment. Depends on what systems are involved and the severity of that involvement. ...Read more

Will being on 10mg/day of prednisone (tapered down from 3 wks@20mg, 1wk@15mg) make it harder to fight off gastroenteritis? I have ulcerative colitis.

Will being on 10mg/day of prednisone (tapered down from 3 wks@20mg, 1wk@15mg) make it harder to fight off gastroenteritis? I have ulcerative colitis.

Steroid gastritis: Corticosteroids like Prednisone can cause gastritis and ulcers, but ironically is used to treat episodes of colon ulcers and flares from ulcerative colitis. If you require several days of prednisone, or have recurrent uc attacks for which you have to take prednisone, then consideration of a protective med for your stomach is a good idea. Prilosec otc and Prevacid (lansoprazole) are otc, talk to your GI doc. ...Read more

I've been told my life expectancy is around 5 years. What course will myelofibrosis take to ultimately lead to my death? Why my prognosis now terminal

Myelofibrosis: I am so very sorry to hear of this diagnosis. I have cared for people over several decades as their doctor with this horrible disease. It has no known cause and no effective treatment. It is a scarring of the bone marrow leading to inability to produce life saving red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. See if a large center (if near one) that specializes in clinical trials can help ...Read more

Is it possible to have lupus and a negative ANA? muscle, pain, swillwn nodes, rash, brain fog on and off for 8 yrs Negative for HIV, lymes, cancers.

Yes: Yes, there is a term called "seronegative spondyloarthropathies" and all it really means is a group of disorders that act like inflamnatory arthritic conditions, but there blood tests are negative. Many patients in this group will ultimately "convert" years later when their blood tests turn positive. This includes people who are later diagnosed with RA and Lupus, among others. ...Read more

Will my Erythema Multiforme flare up if I get a tattoo?

Will my Erythema Multiforme flare up if I get a tattoo?

Probably not: The reports are flares or local EM-like reactions to henna and to some of the bright colors. Ordinary black tattoo ink is less likely to be a problem. Wait on getting inked, though, especially at your age. I'm a buff and have two, but you need to wait several years and if after that time it is STILL exactly what you want, go for it. How can I stop my multiple sclerosis relapse?

How can I stop my multiple sclerosis relapse?

In my opinion,: Virtually all true MS relapses need to be treated, and the classic approach involves steroids or ACTH. An experienced neurologist can set up the therapy. Still, best approach is to prevent the relapse by using potent medication such as Gilenya or Tysabri (natalizumab). ...Read more

Immunologist agreed I have malar rash. How is lupus dx'd since we can't rely on antibody or inflammatory tests w my immune deficiency and steroid tx?

Management/workup: The initial workup will include renal function testing and tests for circulating antibodies. Your steroid treatment may affect the tests for inflammation, moreso than autoantibodies which are still detectable even while being treated with steroids. Avoiding and treating infections, including CMV will be part of the management. I hope that this helps. ...Read more
