Will My Nonverbal Autistic Son Ever Talk
My 7 year autistic son only talks when he wants something . He has very little social skills . Will he ever be able to live independently as adult ?
Prognosis for kids: With autistic spectrum disorder depends on level of cognition, degree of ASD & early response to therapy. Studies show 14-44% favorable outcomes.(http://www.Ncbi.Nlm.Nih.Gov/pmc/articles/pmc3619174/). Having early communication & a full scale iq > 70 (stable from ~ age 7) are favorable. Social/adaptive skills remain. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

3 years old son not talking yet only 15 single words not autistic understands everything and nothing wrong with his physical activities so inteligent?
Confusing statement: A 3 yo who only uses 15 single words is showing a delay in speech and language development. This can occur apart from other syndromes like autism. The receptive or understood words tend to progress much faster than spoken words. An evaluation by a speech and language professional is indicated so a plan of therapy can begin. This has been routine in the US for at least 4 decades. ...Read more

These are signs of a neurologic decline and getting him in front of a neurologist... Or getting several opinions, is certainly warranted! mri's and eeg's don't always tell the whole story... You need a doctor/doctors that will keep looking for some way to explain this... ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My son was born at 28 weeks and has mild pvl.Cp global delay. He cannot talk at nearly 4yrs old. Could doctors be overlooking autism in favor of global delay?
Certainly Possible: There can be some degree of overlap between the two conditions. Many of the featured behaviors of both can be shared. I would look at other symptoms he has and try to address any GI problems, any adhd type symptoms, sleep issues, allergies. Look into the group: maps. Medical academy of pediatric special needs. Doesn't hurt to get more than one opinion. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Why is my autistic 5 year old son (non-verbal), all of a sudden speaking, interacting and following simple commands? He has a cold, low grade fever.
Multiple reasons: The best reason would be a developmental leap in functioning. That would be great, and you could keep doing what you're doing from a behavioral standpoint. Occasionally an alteration like casein removal can cause temporary advancement, but that disappears after a few months. This may hint at a metabolic issue if illness helps in advancement. Make sure you've seen a geneticist and metabolic expert. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
