Will my friend still have an asthma attack if my mom smokes outside?

Will my friend still have an asthma attack if my mom smokes outside?

On the other hand, some asthmatics aren't bothered much by second hand smoke. If the air is cleaned (with a hepa filter) indoors, anyone will be better off. Barbeque smoke, fire place smoke, marshmallow-roasting campfires, etc... Can cause symptoms. ...Read more

I was with a friend & she smokes. She smoked in a closed room i was in. It was only one cigarette. Will second hand smoke harm my heart? I have svt.

Smoking: One time inhalation of cigarette smoke is unlikely to cause a problem. Chronic bystander smoke exposure is a different matter. With respect to svt there is a small possibility of a problem with a one time inhalation. It is always good to avoid smoke, first or second hand. ...Read more

My baby niece died on Monday of SIDS. Her mother smoked spice regularly and breastfed and I was wondering if it had anything to do with her death.

My baby niece died on Monday of SIDS. Her mother smoked spice regularly and breastfed and I was wondering if it had anything to do with her death.

Spice: Spice is so called synthetic marijuana- a designer drug with unknown chemicals sprayed onto chopped plant material. It is unclear what the potential effects of spice may be on the breastfeeding infant. SIDS is a diagnosis of exclusion- meaning all other factors have been ruled out before making the diagnosis. SIDS also associated with second hand tobacco smoke and sleeping on stomach. ...Read more

What do you suggest if my dad in law had a heart-transplant almost two years ago now, and I'm wondering if it's safe to have a ferret around him?

Why not: Your father-in-law is presumably on anti-rejection medicines that make him more susceptible to infection, but I'm not aware of any human illnesses (except rabies) transmitted by a ferret, so why not? ...Read more

My doctor gave me an inhaler to try to help my breathing and its kinda helping with my asthma but my dad smokes around me & i think I have bronchitis?

Asthma: Asthma symptoms are similar to bronchitis and are made worse by smoke exposure. Inhalers containing albuterol only help temporarily relieve symptoms without helping the cause. You may need a controller type inhaler to help with the cause. If your dad would quit smoking that would help too! ...Read more

Ex's dad was alcoholic. Will my son have a chance of it even if they never met?

Ex's dad was alcoholic. Will my son have a chance of it even if they never met?

Chance, not destiny: Alcoholism has many complex causes. Genetics certainly isn't destiny. If you son's grandfather was alcoholic, your son may have some increased chance of it. There is no specific test for this, just a risk factor. When he is old enough, it is appropriate to tell him that this problem may run in his family, same as any other medical history on either side of family (heart dz, cancer, diabetes, etc). ...Read more

She is my wife. When ever she cries or something presure her she will have the pain in heart. I am afraid if its heart attack. Suffer to breath.

Chest pain: A woman of 21 is more likely to have anxiety/panic as a cause of chest pain than she is to have a heart attack. It isn't impossible however. A trip to the doctor to verify that nothing is going on will allow better judgment and perhaps ability to help in the future. ...Read more

I have a 7w old my mom is a smoker and smokes in her home. She wants to have us over for dinner good idea or? She said she would air it out

Hard road ahead: Presence of 2nd hand smoke doubles the kids risk of respiratory and ear infections & increases risk of crib death. Smokers are nose blind and cannot judge when the "smoke smell" is gone. I'd find a sitter and explain to your mom there will be no smokers around baby for now. It's a well known health risk.. ...Read more
