Does naproxen work any better than ibuprofen or alieve to alleviate back and hip pain? Why does my back/hip pain allternate from one side to the other
Personal: For reasons that are not very well understood diff people respond diff to diff anti-inflammatories. While one person may get relief from one, another may get almost no benefit and relief from the other. As to why your pain alternates that is very diff to answer without more info, but often if we have pain we favor one side & overuse the other. As one side gets better the other hurts. 19yo F: Chiro believes left hip pain & weakness from bursitis (horse rider w/ many falls). Ibuprofen & ice=no help. Best form of treatment? How to DX?
Followup: If it does not get better, consider seeing a medical doctor in followup. Hip bursitis can cause pain but usually not weakness. A sciatica can cause similar symptoms as well. A detailed exam and possibly an MRI will confirm the correct diagnosis and let you know the best treatment options. Read more

Heavy pain left calf and shin. Doc gave me steroid shot left hip. Pain subsided. Now pain in left heal/bottom of foot. What can cause this?
The shot... maybe: If, in the process of injecting your hip, the tip of the needle touched the sciatic nerve, that would explain referred pain in your heel and foot. If this is the case, it should resolve over time. I would certainly report this new finding to the doctor who gave you the shot. Hope this helps. Feel better! Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

I have a friend who is saying that she is feeling sharp pains around the hip area and is starting to get a sharp pain 4mg of Advil (ibuprofen)
If: If your friend is still dealing with hip pain then she should see a doctor. If she was in an accident, fell, or suffered trauma for any reason then she could be dealing with muscle pain, or even a fracture. A detailed history, physical, and diagnostic testing which may include an x-ray are in order. In the meantime over the counter advil or tylenol (acetaminophen) may help, follow the instructions on the package for dosage information. Read more
I have been experiencing pain in my lower back/hip area. It is most painful in the morning. Advil (ibuprofen) helps, but I am worried something is wrong.?
Back and hip pain.: You are very young and it seems you are an avid skier. Back and hip pain are very common when a person wakes up because sleep positions can aggravate nerves in the lumbosacral region of the lower back. You are young and active and you should be assessed for lumbar sacral problems. Good luck Read more
Dr says I have bursitis in left hip and sending me to ortho dr but app is not till tues and hip is constantly hurting. Dr gave ibuprofen but no help?
Short term treatment: Yes. Anti inflammatory medications (like ibuprofen) can be very useful for an acute musculoskeletal injury. But not forever. Giving it a try, preferably with food, 3 times a day for a few days, as well as ice or heat (whichever feels better) and gentle stretching of the area until it feels better is usually enough. But it is not safe for every day, unless recommended by your doctor, past 1 month. Read more
Sharp pain left hip standing to long when I lift heavy objects. And job requires me to lift heavy objects. Took ibuprofen and iced does not help.
See medical provider: Sharp hip pain in a 23 year old can be several things. I would start by seeing a medical provider and getting hip x-rays. The x-rays may show nothing or possible small bone build up (impingement). After trying ibuprofen and ice, you may benefit from physical therapy or an MRI to evaluate the hip in more detail for a cartilage tear. You may also benefit from work restrictions until improved. It: It will be tough to completely rest the hip flexor and keep up your fitness. You can try some less demanding activities during the "rest" period. Try riding a stationary bike with no to low resistance. If your feeling deep groin pain, you may want to have your hip labrum checked out. Could be a labral tear. Read more
Had a steroid shot in hip yesterday due to bursitis and the pain is so bad today it hurts to walk. I've taken 600 mg ibuprofen but no help?
I advise you: To call or see your physician. You should not have such pain in the normal trochanteric bursitis treatment. Actually you should expect good response. In the face of recent steroid contamination, one need to be vigilant to the worst case scenario. More pain is not a good sign. Good luck. Read more
