Is there a small portable device that can measure hydration levels to see if someone is drinking not enough or too much water?
Unfortunately no: Unfortunately to get an adequate intake and output for hydration status, the best way is to measure accurately what you're taking in, what you are output. Other methods for such a hydration status is obtaining orthostatic tilt test, measuring blood pressure, heart rate between supine, seated, and standing positions, assessing for skin turgor, moisture in the mucous membrane. ...Read more
I have a higher Rhr (80-95) for a high level athlete and hr goes up very quickly. Visible pulse. Lightheaded at times. Very hydrated. Is this IST?
Heart rates: Rapid resting heart rates in a young, athletic female raise the question of overactive thyroid, anemia or iron deficiency. The latter 2 result from heavy menstrual periods. Lightheadedness can occur with low or high blood pressure. Your physician can check your sitting and standing blood pressure and perform a cardiac examination and also order appropriate tests in order to explain your symptoms. ...Read more

Follow your Doc...: Clinically, you are optimizing the benefit of kidney transplant, but when and when is the landing point of post-kidney transplant recovery remain to be seen. For the ongoing care, it would be more & most reasonable and beneficial to closely work with your existing nephrologist and PCP than guessing online. Best wish... ...Read more

91 year old male with pain on left side about hip level but towards the back. No blood in urine. Could this be a kidney stone on Coumadin and flomax (tamsulosin). He has a huge protate and does not hydrate enough.
Here are some. ..: Clinically, I agree with my colleague stating musculoskeletal origin as a culprit for pain as described. For a 91-year-old man, bring the detailed info on his voiding history and pain near left hip & lower back stressing their quality, quantity, and sequence of events over time to Doc for analysis, physical exam, & tests such as residual urine, urinalysis, renal function, etc. So to define cause ...Read more
Why do you ask?: If it's just from bodybuilding, ignore it. When I was lifting weights daily, I ran 1.6-1.8. Same applies if you've got a lot of muscle because you're overweight. Otherwise, get with your physician about why your kidneys may not be working to capacity. Very often it's meds -- ibuprofen is infamous. How's your BUN and urinalysis? Best wishes. ...Read more
Kidney function: Creatinine is just one measure of kidney function. "Normal" depends upon your lab so it's best to ask doc for results from lab that include reference range. These days, in the States, we ask our labs to calculate eGFR which gives better assessment of kidney function after taking into account age, gender, weight & ethnicity (https://goo. Gl/gPIRhM). Young men w/more muscle tend to have higher Creati ...Read more
Yes: While very uncommon, all of the statin drugs have been known to cause muscle injury. The release from injured muscle of a substance called myoglobin can plug up the kidneys and cause the creatinine to rise. However, under those circumstances there is usually significant muscle pain or weakness and often the urine has a reddish appearance. Also a muscle enzyme (CPK) will be strikingly elevated. ...Read more
Worthless: Except as part of a well-informed system of healthy eating to manage your diabetes. There's no "superfood" to promote good health, and if your creatinine is a bit up as a result of your diabetes, sensible diet and especially medication and fitness will go a long way to keeping you and your kidneys healthy. Glad you're health-focused and best wishes. ...Read more
Yes and know: What determines if dialysis is necessary is if all attempts to manage all of the things that go wrong when kidneys fail have been tried and failed. Usually this happens when the creatine levels reaches 10, but I have seen levels higher than 10 before dialysis became necessary. ...Read more
Not much: Urine creatinine is concentrated with dehydration, but is always higher than blood creatinine except in severe kidney desease. The urine creatinine is much higher than blood in a normal state. The importance of urine creatinine is in the calculation of creatinine clearance and fractional excretions. This requires interpretation by your physician. ...Read more
Several factors.: Simply put, creatinine is produced by muscles, enters blood and other body fluid spaces, and ultimately is removed by kidneys. Your cr level is dependent on all these things (how much your muscles release, how much any residual kidney function removes, and how much is "diluted" by excess body fluid). Dialysis removes cr, so generally the level has less clinical utility in dialysis patients. ...Read more
