If L5 disc was herniated would it cause L5 and s1 nerve symptoms or just l5? Would L5 and SI both have to be herniated to cause those symptoms?
Believe it not---: Herniated L5/S1 disc could cause root symptoms of L5 but not S1, S1 but not L5 (more unlikely), L5 & S1 (common), L4 & L5 (tough but not impossible), or NO symptoms (unusual). With your pain symptoms shooting down the leg an L5 nerve root compression is virtually a gimme. To know if S1 or L4 are affected needs an exam. Wanna talk? www.healthtap.com/drsaghafi ...Read more
Back disc L4 L5 compresed moderately to L5 nerveroot & L5 s1 mildly intending calsac s1 nerveroot. doing PT. can it cure? Once cured wil ths come agn?
Yes and no: Physical therapy does not "cure" the radiologic findings you are describing; but some people can come through therapy with much less pain and able to be much more active. And because the findings in the MRI are not dangerous, if anything nonoperative can be done to reduce your pain and improve your activity level that would essentially be a form of "cure." ...Read more

How about PT: Well, I know you're in pain with all that you've said..you haven't specified the nature of the abdominal injury so I don't know whether or not you are bedbound right now or able to get up and move about? Is there a plan to surgerize the back with everything there? I wouldn't necessarily unless it's your only option. But as far as posture goes, PT is usually pretty good with helping with that. ...Read more

See your doctor: The doctor who ordered the scan which showed the disc herniations should be able to give advice regarding the next steps. Any numbness or weakness associated with the sciatica should be worked up by a neurosurgeon, who may recommend conservative management including injections, endoscopic or minimally invasive discectomy, laminectomy etc depending on the findings. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Large L5S1 disc extrusion compressing L5 nerve & s1s2 nerve roots.sciatica&numbness in foot. can I swim or will it aggravate problem.
TimeOfStrifeSeeKnife: Swimming is a good idea but just go easy at first and see how you do. You'll know if you overdid it if you get too sore within 48 hours (at your tender age). Might be a good idea to get an instructor or therapist to help you at the beginning, if possible--even a friend. And be sure to exercise the arms and chest. Breast stroke with a gentle kick. But it sounds like you'll need more than swimming. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Aquatic exercise: Swim, water aerobics or walking in chest deep water. We are about 80% lighter standing in chest deep water due to buoyancy. This will make exercising easier. Start with an amount that is relatively easy and comfortable, then repeat 4 or more days per week and add a few minutes to the program once a week, initially only add 2-3 mins per week, so you don't over do it. Don't give up and keep moving. ...Read more
