I have a ventral hernia and want to lose weight. How can I exercise without hurting?

Aerobic Exercise: Weight loss is primarily related to reducing caloric intake and increasing aerobic activity, in that order of importance. Neither of those should be affected by the presence of a ventral hernia. While building muscle mass may improve one's metabolic rate, this needs to be balanced by the effect that heavy lifting has on the hernia. Have you considered hernia repair? ...Read more

Need 2 calculate BMI: Your body mass index (bmi) calculation may be helpful in determining if you're too heavy (>25), too thin (<18), or just right (19-25). Obesity is defined as bmi >30. There are of course a lot of other consideration when figuring out what your ideal weight should be: activity, illness, age, plans for surgery, etc. It's good you're thinking "healthy" here...Now do some homework to plan strategy. ...Read more

The hernia: Is actually a defect through which a portion of your stomach protrudes through an opening in your diaphragm causing heartburn or gastric distress. 6 weeks: The surgeon that performed the hernia repair should provide individual recommendations for returning to activity after surgery. Especially after 20 years, you need to use caution when restarting an exercise program and would benefit from working with a licensed trainer. ...Read more

How long can tissue be caught in a hernia before it becomes dead tissue, the doctor I saw said he wouldn't do the surgery til I lose weight?

How long can tissue be caught in a hernia before it becomes dead tissue, the doctor I saw said he wouldn't do the surgery til I lose weight?

No set time.: Whether tissue in a hernia dies or not is dependent on several variables. The biggest risk factor for strangulation (dead tissue) is whether it is incarcerated (stuck) in the hernia or not. If it is reducible or can be pushed back in, then the risk of dying is very low. Another big factor is the size of the hernia. Actually the bigger the hole, the lower the risk of the tissue dying. ...Read more

Anatomy: I do not get the question and am trying to understand it from your point of view.

Being obese or significantly over weight increases the likelihood of all kinds of hernias. But, a hiatal hernia is very different than an umbilical or abdominal wall hernia.

I have a belly button hernia. My stomach feels and looks like I swallowed a watermelon. I can't lose weight and alot of stomach pain. What should I do?

Hernia Repair: If you have an umbilical (Belly Button) hernia and you're having pain, you should have surgery to repair the problem. The combination of diet modification and exercise will allow you to lose weight. Liposuction after achieving goal weight if necessary. ...Read more
