Fracture (Definition)

A fracture is a broken bone. As there is cartilage at the end of many bones at the joint, a fracture may also include a break in the cartilage. Fractures and broken bones are the same thing. It seems that many believe that a "fracture" is a lesser injury or an incomplete break in the bone, but this is not correct. Fractures may be displaced or ...Read more

Broken wrist, wrist swelling gone, hand swollen, what should I do?

Broken wrist, wrist swelling gone, hand swollen, what should I do?

Have you been seen: Without seeing your xray hard to say but you should probably get seen by an orthopaedic surgeon. Treatment will depend on how bad of a break: whether there is substantial displacement and thus need for a reduction (realignment of the broken bones) either closed or possibly surgery. ...Read more

Left hand middle finger tight with stiffness. Can't bend it. Swollen @ the joint & palm. No pain, just uncomfortable.

Left hand middle finger tight with stiffness. Can't bend it. Swollen @ the joint & palm. No pain, just uncomfortable.

No injury?: Assuming you haven't injured that finger somehow (sometimes it is hard to remember...might have seemed like nothing at the time)... I'm thinking things that aren't exactly "serious", but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt! Possibly tendinitis in that finger, or a bit of arthritis in the joint. Try using an ice pack, and reducing movement, maybe w/ a splint. If it continues, I would get an x-ray. ...Read more

Painful pinched nerve in thumb, 1st and 2nd fingers on dominant right hand. Numb fingers, muscles sore, no grip. What can I do until appt?

SUGGEST: Let's assume you have carpal tunnel syndrome, and it is affecting the median nerve substantially. You have about a 35% chance that wearing a wrist splint, which you can find at orthopedics supply store, will calm down the inflammation, and decrease symptoms if worn thru-out the day. An OTC NSAID may also help a bit. ...Read more

How can you tell if finger is broken or jammed. Index finger is quite swollen down into knuckle on hand. Can move it?

How can you tell if finger is broken or jammed. Index finger is quite swollen down into knuckle on hand. Can move it?

X-ray: The only real way to tell is with an x-ray. If you had a traumatic episode (ie falling on it) then it would also point to more of a fracture. If you had no injury to your finger and the finger is also swollen, then you may need to be evaluated for an infection if you have any open sores on the finger. ...Read more

Hit the center of proximal phalanx on my right pointer finger. Swollen knot, bruising & painful bending. Bruised or would raised knot mean fracture?

Hit the center of proximal phalanx on my right pointer finger. Swollen knot, bruising & painful bending. Bruised or would raised knot mean fracture?

Fractures can swell: either locally or diffusely. A knot may mean there is a very bad bruise to skin or it could mean a fracture. A fracture in the finger can be nondislplaced meaning everyting moves well and is lined up so one does not necessarily have a great deformity, joint fractures or fractures in the plane of motion with swelling may not loo obvious except for pain and swelling. If symptoms persist, get seen ...Read more

Severely sprained my wrist and can't move fingers. Not broken but hurts horribly.

Wrist sprain: May indicate a severe injury not just a "normal no fracture" X-ray. Wrist ligament injuries can be complex and if associated with significant swelling and pain one need to be evaluated with a hand surgeon. Don't be satisfied with "no fracture" seek treatment. ...Read more

Broken Bone (Definition)

Is it broken or fractured is a question I am often asked. The answer is basically that a broken or fractured bone is the same thing. A fracture means a break in the cortex or the strong layer of outer bone cells. In an adult the average time for that to heal varies greatly but is often considered to ...Read more
