For what?: Doxylamine (unisom) is an anti-histamine which causes sedation. Ambien (zolpidem) is a sedative-hypnotic. I'd guess the question i'd ask is why do you need either? Perhaps get a referral to a sleep specialist so he/she can get a good history and perhaps find a solution as to why you feel you need any medication at all to help with sleep. Do you need to?: That's a better question, and the follow up is why do you need it? The drug itself is similar to Benadryl (diphenhydramine) with similar side effects. It's never wise to take sleeping aids for long term without looking for an underlying cause for the sleep problem.
