Can an enlarged heart due to htn and/or mitral valve prolapse heal itself & return to normal size? If so, how? I have both mvp & htn.

Can an enlarged heart due to htn and/or mitral valve prolapse heal itself & return to normal size? If so, how? I have both mvp & htn.

Not likely.: Once the heart is enlarged from a long standing problem, it will not go back to normal architecture though it may well continue to function normally if the enlargement is not significant. Sometimes, when the enlargement happens rapidly due to an acute issue, the size can go back to normal. ...Read more

Valve (Definition)

A valve is a structure that regulates the direction of flow. The heart is a special kind of pump. It moves blood by squeezing and relaxing. There are 4 chambers and each chamber has a valve. This keeps blood from moving backwards when the heart squeezes. When a chamber squeezes it lets the blood move forward but when the chamber is relaxed it prevents the blood from ...Read more

Are root canals harmful to her mitral valve heart condition. Why is this?

Are root canals harmful to her mitral valve heart condition. Why is this?

Root canals are not: The need for a root canal is the irreversable damaage to the rooth nerve. This results in an abscess. If the abcess is not addressed, the infection can definitely be harmful to the mitral valve. The root canal is one treatment option, replacement with an implant is another, but the infection must be addressed. See a dentist. ...Read more

My heart rate is still fast in the 90's after my mitral valve repair is this normal. Will it get slower after some time, only been three weeks.

Yes: You're still in the very early recovery period. Although your heart is repaired, your heart takes time to remodel. Give it 3-6 months. Be sure you're in normal rhythm as atrial fibrillation is very common after mv repair (it would be irregular) and it tends to be faster than normal. ...Read more

Is a mitral valve that's floppy fatal? Heart beats usually fast.

No but check on it: A floppy mitral valve is known as myxomatous or prolapsing. It is usually diagnosed by echocardiogram (an ultrasound of the heart). It is not fatal, but if it is associated with significant leaking of the valve can lead to arrhythmias or even heart failure if not assessed regularly by a cardiologist. ...Read more

Will fast heart rate cause mitral valve leakage or are two if those not related at all?

Compensation: Asymptomatic mitral valve regurgitation may compensate by having a faster heart rate. The body can compensate two ways. Either a faster heart rate or more blood per beat. If you are active then your body may compensate for the regurgitation by having a resting heart rate above normal. Follow with a cardiologist. Also ask to see a surgeon so that if you need surgery in the future. ...Read more

My daughter is 21, thin, a non smoker, has signficantly leakage in mitral valve. Recent te test:strong heart. Had rheumatic fevr is surgery inevitable?

It Depends: Time is a very helpful tool. If its is severe, then she will probably need surgery at some point, but it's impossible to predict when. If it's mild/moderate, the valve could remain stable. So, she should have an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) at least once a year, and it does not have to be a trans-esophageal type. ...Read more
