Will Benadryl Help Coughing From Asthma
I wanted to know I took benadryl (diphenhydramine) because my allergies are acting up and I'm stuffed up, i have a cough, I'm weeding because my asthma as well. Is it o?
Probably not: I presume you are asking whether it is ok to do some weeding when your nose is stuffed up and your asthma is not controlled. In general , the answer would be no since you are likely allergic to weed pollen and molds from the disturbed soil. It is also important for you to call your doctor about your asthma. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or any other antihistamine has no decongesting action, nasal steroid does. ...Read more
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more
Im asthmatic but developed a barking deep cough 4 weeks ago. Relived by ventolin and benadryl. Is the cough triggered by my asthma or something else?
Trigger ???: This is likely an interplay between your asthma, which is a constant but hopefully controlled,an an external trigger. Some exposure or infectious process is likely the "trigger".Sorting that out may require you keep track of when, what, where all this started and what additional symptoms you have had during the process.Take the list to you doc and see if additional treatment/s are needed. ...Read more
Can i take codeine cough syrup & Benadryl (diphenhydramine) with Lexapro not at the same time my dry cough from asthma is getting really bad?
Treat asthma: The best way to control a cough from asthma is to treat the asthma and not using cough suppression. You need to see your doctor to get the right medication since I do not see the presence of any asthma control drugs in your profile . Stopping smoking would also be in your best interest. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Hi, my daughter is 14 and has asthma, she has a cold with an asthmatic cough, can I give her Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and Nyquil on top of her flovent?
Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and asthma: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) should not be used for asthma. With asthma there is decreased ability to clear mucus. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) has a drying effect on the airway and it is possible to plug up an asthmatic by making the mucus thicker. Also it is sedating and during an asthmatic attack you want the patient to be awake and to cough up mucous. NyQuil has benadryl (diphenhydramine) in it as well as Dextromethorphan which can be sedative. ...Read more

Have pneumonia asthma bronchitis on prednisone 40mgx5 levoflaxcin500x7 is ok to take benedryl, cough supp and expectorant to manage severe coughing?
Probably OK but..: If your cough is caused by uncontrolled asthma, then you need to get the asthma under control instead of relying on cough medicine to relieve the symptoms. On the other hand, if your lung function is reasonably good and the cough is too bothersome, i see no harm in taking a cough suppressant for a few days. I would suggest that you talk to your doctor about these issues. ...Read more
15 yr old w skin rash and incessant asthmatic cough. Can he take Benadryl, (diphenhydramine) Claritin, or Pepcid AC to clear rash and NyQuil to calm cough?
No: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is not a treatment for asthma. Depending on the severity of asthma, different medications can be used. Mostly, they are inhalers since it does not cause serious side effects when you take it for a long time. You should see an allergist or pulmonologist for proper diagnosis and treatment. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Use with caution: The antihistamine products like benedryl will thicken your mucous secretions which can be a problem for those on the margins with asthma. Asthma patients tend to have problems with excess secretions already & thickening them lakes it harder for them to be cleared from the airways. Benedryl can often be used during periods of good control, but i avoid it during flares. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Depends on situation: Antihistamines have a drying effect & can cause a thickening of the respiratory mucous that is already a problem for some asthmatics. When asthma is well controlled & the occasional allergic issue arises, i see no problem using benedryl. I don't recommend it to those that are symptomatic with their asthma. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Can asthma develop with age, as in 27 years old and just now showing symptoms? And is Benadryl (diphenhydramine) bad to take if showing symptoms of asthma?
Any age: Asthma can develop at any age. Most children who develop asthma will have symptoms before 3 years old. 20% of adult onset asthma will have an occupational trigger for their asthma. Old information suggested Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and old antihistamines could worsen asthma. This is not the case, but the newer antihistamines such as claritin, zyrtec, and Allegra are effective and do have less side effects. ...Read more
Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is sedating: Claritin, zyrtec, allegra, or Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can help with allergy and asthma symptoms caused by allergies to respiratory pollens or other airborne allergens. One should work with his doctor to see which combination of over-the-counter allergy meds and prescription asthma inhalers/pills work the best. A patient will learn over time, what medicines to add or increase, depending on how "bad" the air is. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Will giving Benadryl (diphenhydramine) help my 10yo with his asthma at night? he also has allergies.
No: Children who have asthma may have symptoms during the night, the major one being a nighttime dry cough. Benadryl(diphenhydramine) is an antihistamine which helps with allergies and can cause sleepiness. In most cases, Benadryl will not hurt the asthma but will not fix the problem. Asthma symptoms in the night are usually signs of poor asthma control and warrant follow-up with your pediatrician. ...Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers
I have really bad allergies & also asthmatic, I am wondering if it is safe to take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) as my allergies are unbareable, will it affect my asthma?
Better to use Clarit: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or diphenylhydramine is a first generation antihistamine wich is quite sedating and has to be taken every 4to6 hours to be effective, while Claritin is long actong once a day, non sedating and can be taken with all other asthma meds. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Would it be possible that a pregnant woman take benadryl/antihistamine to treat an allergic reaction or help allergy induced asthma?
Yes & No: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is considered safe in pregnancy & may be used to treat allergic conditions like allergic rhinitis or hives. Antihistamines like Benadryl are not effective for itching not associated with a rash. This can be due to pregnancy-related liver problems. Talk to your OB about that. Benadryl is also not effective for asthma. There are safe asthma drugs to use while pregnant. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My 3.5yr old has head & chest congestion. Is it safe to give him Mucinex & Benadryl (diphenhydramine) together to dry up his congestion before it irritates his asthma?
No: Antihistamines such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can cause drying of the congestion in the lungs and actually can make his asthma worse. Lots of oral fluids would be better, and start treating his asthma early if it occurs. Mucinex may help loosen the secretions, but likely won't help his wheezing. ...Read more
