The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

Is it ok to give my 5 year old children's benadryl and childrens mucinex cough? She has bad allergies which makes her cough mostly at night.
MGT: I would not advise giving these medications to your child based on the information provided. I would suggest an over the counter anti histamine such as Claritin instead which is less sedating. The underlying cause of her nighttime cough should be further evaluated by her PCP. Does she have a history of asthma? Is there smoke exposure? ...Read more
I'm having a Mild headache also a Dry uncomfortable cough. I have seasonal allergies, took Benadryl (diphenhydramine) but its not helping much. What else can i do?
I wanted to know I took benadryl (diphenhydramine) because my allergies are acting up and I'm stuffed up, i have a cough, I'm weeding because my asthma as well. Is it o?
Probably not: I presume you are asking whether it is ok to do some weeding when your nose is stuffed up and your asthma is not controlled. In general , the answer would be no since you are likely allergic to weed pollen and molds from the disturbed soil. It is also important for you to call your doctor about your asthma. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or any other antihistamine has no decongesting action, nasal steroid does. ...Read more

Increased sedation: These *may* be taken these together - with certain precautions. They both have the effect of drowsiness, and some people are more susceptible than others. If you become drowsy to both, understand that you're in for a double-whammy. Even if not, it'd be a good idea not to take the first dose in the hours before you have to drive anywhere, but rather in the evening before going to bed. ...Read more

Zyrtec, claritin, singular, and allegra don't work on my 7 yr olds allergies at night (nasal drip & cough) only benedryl. Can he take it every night?
Dose?: Zyrtec & Benadryl (diphenhydramine) are very similar. He should get similar relief if he's taking the right dose for his weight. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) will make him more drowsy. You should talk to his doctor about an rx nose spray to control allergies like Flonase or nasonex. ...Read more
Perhaps, one: See prior answer for details about benadryl (diphenhydramine). An over the counter dose is 25 mg (the same dose they put in many 'sleep aides' like tylenol-pm, where the side effect of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) of drowsiness is the main ingredient). If taking it for typical allergies (runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing), could try one tablet. But there are better ones today with less side effects (zyrtec, allegra, claritin, etc). ...Read more

7-18 hr, effectively: That's with a normal dose. The half-life (time it takes 1/2 the med to leave your body) is 3.4 to 9.2 hrs. Double that time and 75% of it has left your system at which point it's generally not helping anymore. Triple it and 87.5% is gone, etc. If you take twice the normal dose you could still have a significant amount after more than 24 hours. ...Read more
