I took an extra daily dose of folic acid yesterday and today I developed heartburn, can that cause heartburn?

I took an extra daily dose of folic acid yesterday and today I developed heartburn, can that cause heartburn?

Could depend on dose: I've had patients tell me that Folic Acid sometimes causes some gastrointestinal distress and heartburn, and it is a listed side effect. Higher doses seem to do it more. That being said, most people taking extra Folic Acid are also pregnant - which is prime time for developing heartburn symptoms, independent of Folic Acid use.

Iam 36yrs f. what cause and what does it mean high folic acid level (24.00 ng/ml) and normal Vit B12 (475pg/ml)?

Not a problem: There are no ill-effects associated with a high serum folate. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex.

I have a Hx of Anencephaly in 2 precious pregnancies... I'm currently pregnant. I'm on high dose folic acid. Can too much folic acid be harmful?

No.: Folic acid is a water-soluble vitamin which is a co-factor necessary for adequate production of energy necessary for all of our cell's energy needs--particularly the rapidly-dividing cells of the embryo and fetus. You could take double-blinded or triple the amount prescribed to you, and most all would be washed out of the body within 24 hours.

Homocysteine 10.9 normal is lower than 10.4. B12 folic acid came back normal. So what else can cause it to be high?

Stop worrying: Reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside. I wouldn't give that stuff another thought. A decade ago, this was being tooted as a new coronary risk factor but most of the pathologists I know disregard it. Your B12 and folate (folic acid) are fine. There's nothing you're going to do about this. It probably means nothing. * say, "Forget it." But ask your own physician.

I'm 18 y and I have hereditary spherocytosis, I want to know if taking high doses of (folate (folic acid) as metafolin) can help me? And cyanocobalamin can help too?

Yes: Yes, absolutely, take folic acid, vitamin B12 supplement. In addition, you may want to ask you md to check your iron level and if your iron is low- you should also take some iron supplement. With hs- you will have chronic hemolysis - rbc destruction -thus your body needs what ever it takes to hep produce new red blood cell to compensate with the hemolysis. Also you are at risk to have gallstones.

When I have complete blood count done, B12 and folate (folic acid) are a tad high, then when a separate blood test is done for B12 and folate (folic acid), both are ok. Causes?

When I have complete blood count done, B12 and folate (folic acid) are a tad high, then when a separate blood test is done for B12 and folate (folic acid), both are ok. Causes?

Doesn't make sense.: If the same test done for the levels, and shows different results, there may also be a lab error. I would repeat one again only for b 12 and folate (folic acid) and compare.

What would cause a slightly elevated B12 and folate (folic acid) level on complete blood count?

What would cause a slightly elevated B12 and folate (folic acid) level on complete blood count?

Dietary supplents: The most likely cause of elevated B12 and folate (folic acid) is dietary or parenteral supplements. Other sources of B12 and folate (folic acid) are the diet itself. Consult your doctor for more information.

Folic acid 5mg cause spotting 2dpo untill next period. Happens everytime I take it but hv to take now bcos ttc. Can reduce dose to 400ug?

Folic acid 5mg cause spotting 2dpo untill next period. Happens everytime I take it but hv to take now bcos ttc. Can reduce dose to 400ug?

Consider 5-MTHF form: About 1/3 of people genetically have difficulty converting Folic Acid to its active form, 5-mthf. These people will benefit much more from taking that form of foiate- see www. Drdebe. Com/l-5-mthf-new-supplement-that-could-save-your-life. Html. There is evidence that folic acid, a synthetic substance, may be hazardous for many-see www. Drfuhrman. Com/library/folic_acid_dangers_and_prenatal_vitamins. Aspx.

Is it harmful to have high folic acid levels in body prior to getting pregnant? I have read high folic acid prior to pregnancy my cause autism, true?

No, it is not.: There is no clear data supporting a toxic Folic Acid side effect. The only situation where it me be potentially deleterious is pernicous anemia, if it is given without B12 vitamin.

What would cause elevated B12 and folate (folic acid) levels?

What would cause elevated B12 and folate (folic acid) levels?

Stop worrying: We see these from time to time. They are no cause for concern. Reference ranges are set for the vast majority of people. Just be happy. Elevated B12 has some arcane significance in hematology but it does not apply to healthy people. Just be glad.

Are elevated B12 and folate (folic acid) levels bad? Cause of this? How to bring them down to normal levels?

Are elevated B12 and folate (folic acid) levels bad? Cause of this? How to bring them down to normal levels?

Needs evaluation: High B12 & folate (folic acid) is not dangerous per se (these vits. Have no known toxicity)& may not be serious, but high B12 may paradoxically be a sign of B12 deficiency & may also be caused by acute or chronic liver disease or leukemia, so deserves further evaluation-see http://healthyeating. Sfgate. Com/high-vitamin-b12-serum-levels-6037.Html high folate (folic acid) may be a sign of B12 deficiency or blind loop syndrome.

Understanding that deplin is the methyl folate (folic acid) needed to cross blood brain barrier, why is the dose so high 7.5 or 15mg? Non script mf is a lot lower

Biological activity: The l-methyl folate (folic acid) is the biologically active form and will directly affect receptors. You need to know that as we age, fully 52% of adults start to lose the ability to chemically convert folate (folic acid) properly. Therefore, over the counter folate (folic acid) is not identical, and the "methyl folate (folic acid)" sold in health food stores is often the reverse optical isomer and would be fully inactive.

What dose of folic acid should I start with, I'm 8 weeks pregnant?

What dose of folic acid should I start with, I'm 8 weeks pregnant?

0.4mg = 400mcg: Assuming that you do not have children affected by neural tube defect like Spina Bifida, you should be taking 0.4mg of folic acid (folate) once a day. The dose may be written as 400 mcg. In addition to the prenatal vitamin, consume a healthy diet with natural sources of folic acid. Consult your doctor if you have a child with a neural tube defect, because you may need a higher dose of folate.

What is the dose of folic acid to prevent all fetal malformations?

5 mg.: Most of the severe (not all) fetal malformations can be prevented with preconceptional Folic Acid (for at least 3 months before conception). Expect 75% of cardiac defects and >90% of neural tube defects to be prevented thus.

What is the frequency and dose of folic acid? It is causing constipation how can I solve it/

Folic acid: Depending on the age & the deficiency, the serum level & what it is used for, the usual adult dose is 400-1, 000 microgram per day.

Folic Acid (Definition)

Women w/ a hx these disorders should take 10x that amt daily -- 4mg (4000mcg) through the 3rd month of pregnancy. It won't affect fertility, chances of conception/twins, or periods. ...Read more
